NiSource Inc., incorporated on March 29, 2000, is an energy holding company. The Company is engaged in the distribution of natural gas. The Company operates through two business segments: Gas Distribution Operations, which provides natural gas service and transportation services, and Electric Operations, which provides electric services. The Company's principal subsidiaries include NiSource Gas Distribution Group, Inc., a natural gas distribution holding company, and NIPSCO, a gas and electric company. NiSource Finance Corporation (NiSource Finance) is a consolidated finance subsidiary of the Company. NiSource Finance is engaged in financing activities to raise funds for the business operations of the company and its subsidiaries.
Gas Distribution Operations
The Gas Distribution Operations segment provides natural gas service and transportation for residential, commercial and industrial customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Indiana and Massachusetts. The Company's natural gas distribution operations operate approximately 59,000 miles of pipeline. The Company, through its subsidiary, NiSource Gas Distribution Group, Inc., owns approximately six distribution subsidiaries that provide natural gas to residential, commercial and industrial customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Massachusetts. In addition, the Company also distributes natural gas to customers in northern Indiana through its subsidiary, NIPSCO.
The Company generates, transmits and distributes electricity through its subsidiary, NIPSCO, to approximately 463,000 customers in over 20 counties in the northern part of Indiana and engages in wholesale and transmission transactions. NIPSCO owns and operates approximately three coal-fired electric generating stations. The three operating facilities have a net capability of approximately 2,540 megawatts. NIPSCO also owns and operates Sugar Creek, a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant with net capacity of over 535 megawatts, three gas-fired generating units located at NIPSCO's coal-fired electric generating stations with a net capability of approximately 196 megawatts and two hydroelectric generating plants with a net capability of over 10 megawatts. These facilities provide for a total system operating net capability of over 3,281 megawatts. NIPSCO's transmission system, with voltages from 69,000 to 345,000 volts, consists of approximately 2,805 circuit miles. NIPSCO is interconnected with approximately five neighboring electric utilities. NIPSCO participates in the midcontinent independent system operator (MISO) transmission service and wholesale energy market.
