Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.-Petrobras (Petrobras), incorporated on October 3, 1953, operates on an integrated basis and specializes in the oil, natural gas and energy industry. The Company, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in prospecting, drilling, refining, processing, trading and transporting crude oil from producing onshore and offshore oil fields and from shale or other rocks, as well as oil products, natural gas and other liquid hydrocarbons. The Company operates in five segments: Exploration and Production (E&P); Refining, Transportation and Marketing (RT&M); Gas and Power; Biofuels; Distribution, and Corporate. The Company carries out energy related activities, such as research, development, production, transport, distribution and trading of various forms of energy, as well as other related or similar activities.
The Company offers a range of Automotive, Domestic, Aviation, Maritime, Rail, Industrial and Nitrogenous products. Its automotive products include gasoline, diesel fuel, ethanol, vehicular natural gas, Arla 32 (Petrobras Flua) and lubricating oil. It domestic products include Residential Natural Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Turpentine. Its industrial products include Industrial Natural Gas, S-500 Diesel Fuel, Solvent, Paraffin, Green Petroleum Coke, Sulfur, Base Oil, Fuel Oil, Industrial Lubricant, Grease, Fatty Acids, Soap Stock, Glycerin and Olein. Its Nitrogenous products include Reforce N, Fertilizing Urea, Industrial Urea, Premium Urea, Ammonium Sulfate Fertilizer, Industrial Ammonium Sulfate, Fertilizer Ammonia and Industrial Ammonia. Its rails products include Railroad Diesel Fuel and Rail Lubricant. Its maritime products include Verana Diesel, Maritime Diesel Fuel, Bunker and Lubricant for vessels. Its aviation products are Aviation Kerosene and Jet Fuel. The Company also provides various services, such as Petrobras Credit Card, Aviation Card and BR Aviation Club.
Exploration and Production
The Company's E&P segment covers the activities of exploration, development and production of crude oil, natural gas liquid (NGL) and natural gas in Brazil for the purpose of supplying, primarily, its domestic refineries, and also selling the crude oil surplus and oil products produced in the natural gas processing plants to the domestic and foreign markets. The E&P segment also operates through partnerships with other companies.
Refining, Transportation and Marketing
The Company's RT&M segment covers the refining, logistics, transport and trading of crude oil and oil products activities, exporting of ethanol, extraction and processing of shale, as well as holding interests in petrochemical companies in Brazil. The Company has over 10 refineries and a shale processing unit in Parana. The Company's refining park produces upwards of two million barrels of oil products per day, such as diesel, gasoline, naphtha, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, and lubricants, among other substances used as feedstock for many other products.
Gas and Power
The Gas and Power segment covers the activities of transportation and trading of natural gas produced in Brazil and imported natural gas, transportation and trading of liquid natural gas (LNG), generation and trading of electricity, as well as holding interests in transporters and distributors of natural gas and in thermoelectric power plants in Brazil, in addition to being responsible for the fertilizer business. The natural gas supplied to the Brazilian market comes from domestic production, form gas imported from Bolivia, and LNG, which is purchased from other suppliers to be regasified at one of Petrobras' three terminals: Pecem (CE), Bay of All Saints (BA) or Guanabara Bay (RJ).
The Company operates and holds stakes in thermal, wind, and small hydro power plants, which complement the Brazilian energy needs, especially in periods of drought and high demand. There are approximately 40 units in its generating park owned or belonging to subsidiaries or to companies in which it holds equity stakes, including one under construction, with a total generating capacity of approximately 6,880 megawatts (MW). The Company is also building a photovoltaic plant in the municipality of Acu (state of Rio Grande do Norte).
The Company's Biofuels segment covers the activities of production of biodiesel and its co-products, as well as the ethanol-related activities. Its ethanol-related activities include equity investments, production and trading of ethanol, sugar and the surplus electric power generated from sugarcane bagasse. Biofuels include ethanol and biodiesel.
The Distribution segment of the Company includes the activities of its subsidiary Petrobras Distribuidora S.A. Petrobras Distribuidora S.A is engaged in selling oil products, ethanol and vehicle natural gas in Brazil. This segment also includes distribution of oil products operations abroad (South America).
