PPL Corporation (PPL), incorporated on March 15, 1994, is a utility holding company. Through its subsidiaries, PPL delivers electricity to customers in the United Kingdom, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee; delivers natural gas to customers in Kentucky, and generates electricity from power plants in Kentucky. PPL operates through three segments: U.K. Regulated Segment, Kentucky Regulated Segment and Pennsylvania Regulated Segment.
U.K. Regulated Segment
The U.K. Regulated Segment consists of PPL Global, which includes PPL WPD Limited and its subsidiaries' (WPD's) regulated electricity distribution operations, the results of hedging the translation of WPD's earnings from British pound sterling into United States dollars, and certain costs, such as the United States income taxes, administrative costs and allocated financing costs. WPD, through its subsidiaries, operates approximately four of over 10 regulated distribution networks providing electricity service in the United Kingdom. WPD serves across approximately 21,600 square miles in Wales and southwest and central England.
Kentucky Regulated Segment
The Kentucky Regulated segment consists of the operations of LG&E and KU Energy LLC (LKE), a subsidiary of PPL, which owns and operates regulated public utilities engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity and distribution and sale of natural gas, representing primarily the activities of Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) and Kentucky Utilities Company (KU). In addition, certain financing costs are allocated to the Kentucky Regulated segment. LG&E provides electric service to approximately 403,000 customers in Louisville and adjacent areas in Kentucky, covering approximately 700 square miles in over nine counties and provides natural gas service to approximately 322,000 customers in its electric service area and approximately eight additional counties in Kentucky. KU provides electric service in approximately 80 counties in central, southeastern and western Kentucky, in over five counties in southwestern Virginia, and in Tennessee, covering approximately 4,800 non-contiguous square miles. KU also sells wholesale electricity to over 10 municipalities in Kentucky under load following contracts. In Virginia, KU operates under the name Old Dominion Power Company.
Pennsylvania Regulated segment
The Pennsylvania Regulated segment consists of the operations of PPL Electric Utilities Corporation (PPL Electric), a regulated public utility engaged in the distribution and transmission of electricity. PPL Electric delivers electricity to customers in over 10,000-square mile territory in approximately 30 counties of eastern and central Pennsylvania. PPL Electric also provides electricity supply to retail customers in this area.
