Profile: Qlik Technologies Inc (QLIK.OQ)
22 Dec 2014
Qlik Technologies Inc. (QlikTech), incorporated on September 3, 2004, provides user-driven business intelligence (BI) solution that enables its customers. The QlikView Business Discovery platform (QlikView) helps people create and share insights and analysis in groups and across organizations. The Company is engaged in the development, commercialization and implementation of software products and related services. The Company has a diversified distribution model that consists of a direct sales force, a partner network of solution providers (or resellers), original equipment manufacturers (OEM) relationships and system integrators. On June 12, 2012, the Company acquired expressor software corporation (Expressor). QlikView Expressor provides a graphical studio for designing and managing data integration for QlikView apps. The product allows designers and developers to centrally define and manage data definitions, transformations and other design artifacts in business terms. In May 2013, Qlik Technologies Inc acquired NComVA AB.
The Company's customer base consisted of approximately 27,000 active customers. QlikView addresses the needs of a diverse range of customers from small businesses to middle market customers to large enterprises, such as Alliance Healthcare France, Avebe Group, Bell Helicopter, Cardinal Health, Colgate Palmolive Russia, Columbia University, Crossrail Limited, For Eyes Optical, Informatique Banque Populaire, Japan Steel Works, London Borough of Camden, London City Airport, Mazda North America, Moen Incorporated, NASDAQ-OMX, National Institutes of Health, Nationwide Mutual Insurance, NetConnect Germany GmbH & Co. KG, New York City Department of Design and Construction, Rockford Health System, Textron Systems Corporation, Toshiba America, Toyota Motor Corporation Australia, University of Exeter and Westminster City Council.
The QlikView Business Discovery platform can be deployed in a variety of configurations. QlikView Desktop is a Windows application that is installed on the user's computer. QlikView Desktop enables the user to load data from disparate sources, such as databases, data warehouses, flat files, SAP, Salesforce.com, extensible markup language (XML) files or Web services into the computer's memory. Users can then create a range of user interface objects, such as charts, graphs, tables and listboxes and analyze and visualize the data that is stored in memory. In addition, any user interface elements can be grouped together into a static report suitable for printing or e-mailing. The Company offers QlikView Desktop as a free download (called QlikView Personal Edition) with full capabilities to develop analyses, but with the restriction that users can only use analyses they have built themselves. This is referred to as a Personal Use License and allows users to connect to any underlying data source, load data, build user interfaces and conduct interactive analyses of their data. The Personal Use License limits the use of the QlikView files to the person who created it. To share the analysis with another user, each user must have a QlikView license, rather than a Personal Use License.
Small Workgroup Deployment
A small workgroup deployment involves the use of multiple QlikView Desktop applications on client machines without a central server. In order to share QlikView data and analysis created by others in the workgroup, each user must have an individual license.
Departmental and Enterprise Deployments
Departmental and enterprise deployments utilize a server to provide centralization of all QlikView analysis. The QlikView Server component supports authentication and security models to ensure appropriate user access and simultaneous access to analyses by large user groups. The QlikView Server can be grouped across more than one physical server into clusters to provide fault tolerance and additional scale. The Company offers the QlikView Server at two license levels: Small Business Edition and Enterprise Edition. Small Business Edition is limited to 25 users and is suitable only for small and midsize deployments.
To manage large deployments of QlikView, the Company offers its QlikView Publisher component, which is an administrative interface for maintaining QlikView analyses. QlikView Publisher enables users to reload data in a QlikView analysis on a periodic basis to ensure that the most current data is available. QlikView Publisher connects to directory servers within organizations and applies user security rules to a QlikView analysis to ensure appropriate user access. QlikView Publisher is licensed on a per server basis and includes a separately licensable option for portable document format (PDF) report distribution capabilities. For large enterprise deployments, multiple QlikView Servers and QlikView Publishers can be clustered to provide load balancing and fail over capabilities. Access to the QlikView Server is governed by a Client Access License (CAL) licensing model. The most common QlikView Server license type is a Named User CAL. In addition to access to the QlikView Server, the Company offers separately licensable options for other offerings.
QlikView on-Premise or in the Cloud
The Company sells on-premise licenses; however, its users have deployed QlikView on-premise or in the cloud. It also has partners that are using QlikView to deliver software-as-a-service (SaaS) BI offerings.
QlikView and Big Data
QlikView can connect to Big Data stores, whether they are very large data warehouses, such as Teradata, or Hadoop data clusters. In most situations, customers will identify data subsets to solve specific business problems and deploy QlikView apps around these subsets. In situations where users need access to very large data sets, QlikView Direct Discovery provides an ability to connect to a Big Data source from within a QlikView app, and link that to data held in QlikView's in-memory engine.
The Company competes with Actuate, Information Builders, MicroStrategy, the SAS Institute, Tableau, TIBCO, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP AG.
