Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. (Quantum), incorporated in October 2000, is an integrated alternative energy company engaged in the development and production of advanced clean propulsion systems, and renewable energy generation systems and services. The Company’s portfolio of technologies and products include hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid electric powertrain systems, advanced battery control systems, electronic vehicle control systems and software, fuel storage and fuel delivery products and control systems for use in hybrid, fuel cell, and other alternative fuel vehicles. It also designs and manufactures computerized controls, regulators and automatic shut-off equipment, lightweight, high-pressure hydrogen and natural gas storage tanks using advanced composite technology and hydrogen refueling systems. The Company classifies its business operations into three segments: Electric Drive & Fuel Systems, Renewable Energy and Corporate. In April 2012, its wholly owned subsidiary, Schneider Power Inc., acquired a newly constructed 10 megawatt utility-scale wind farm in Ontario, Canada. In September 2013, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc announced that Schneider Power Inc and certain of Schneider Power Inc.'s wholly owned subsidiaries, closed Phase 1 sale of Schneider Power's 10 Megawatt (MW) Trout Creek wind farm development project.
Electric Drive & Fuel Systems Segment
The Company’s Electric Drive & Fuel Systems Segment provides hybrid drivetrain and advanced fuel system design and technology, powertrain engineering, electronic control and software strategies, system integration, manufacturing and assembly of propulsion systems and sub-systems for a range of automotive and transportation applications, including plug-in hybrid electric, hybrid electric, range extended plug-in electric, fuel cell and other alternative fuel vehicles. The Company supplies its design services, hybrid electric drive systems and packaged fuel systems for alternative fuel vehicles primarily to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) customers for use by consumers and for commercial and government fleets. It has developed a series of range extended plug-in hybrid electric drive (PHEV) systems. The Company has also developed F-Drive, a 2nd Generation version of its PHEV drive system. The Company has developed its Q-Drive hybrid system for the Fisker Karma platform. It also has other derivative drive systems within its family of hybrid drives, including a new advanced all-wheel-drive diesel hybrid electric powertrain that we refer to as Q-Force. The Company’s packaged fuel systems are comprised of high pressure composite tanks, injection, regulation, monitoring, and electronics and control.
The Company supplies its hybrid electric drive systems and packaged fuel systems for alternative fuel vehicles to OEM customers for use by consumers and for commercial and government fleets. The Company’s Electric Drive & Fuel Systems products, technologies and services include Electronic vehicle control systems and software; Lithium ion and advanced battery control systems; Inverters and Motors; engine/Generator and Fuel Cell Power; Fuel storage, Fuel delivery and Accessories. The Services of the Company include Vehicle Design and Prototype Vehicle Builds; Systems Integration; Testing and Validation; Certification and Compliance; Production Engineering and Manufacturing Process Development; Vehicle Level Assembly; Training, and Service and Warranty.
Electronic vehicle control systems monitor electrical control strategies and/or gaseous fuel flow to drive systems to meet manufacturers’ and government hybrid electric, fuel cell, or engine requirements. The energy storage systems include high energy and power lithium cells, battery management systems, thermal control systems, state of charge/health and control algorithms, integrated into complete battery packs developed for automotive applications. The Company provides customization of inverters and a variety of motors as an integral subsystem to its drive systems. The Company provides power generating systems for use as a prime-mover or range extender. Fuel storages are advanced composite, ultra-lightweight tanks. Fuel delivery is pressure regulators, fuel injectors, flow control valves, and other components designed to control the pressure, flow and metering of gaseous fuels. It also provides accessories, such as DC-DC converters, DC-AC inverters, electric air conditioning systems, power steering pumps, etc with its complete hybrid drive systems.
The Company design complete concept and low-volume production vehicles to demonstrate hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicle architecture. It integrates its advanced hybrid drive systems with battery systems, advanced fuel storage, fuel delivery, engines, electric motors, inverters, generators, and electronic vehicle control components into hybrid and PHEVs, hydrogen fueled vehicles, fuel cell vehicle applications, as well as hydrogen refueling products. The company has test equipment (shaker tables, temperature chambers, salt spray booths, roller and engine dynamometers to test and validate automotive devices. The Company certifies complete vehicles in its CARB and EPA certified test lab. It provides complete production engineering and manufacturing process development for its limited volume production process as a tier-one OEM automotive supplier and for certain military applications. The Company develops and manages the assembly process for integration of its systems into end products at its facilities or at its customers’ facilities for low to high volume applications. It has developed technical training for customers. The Company has extensive capabilities in developing service procedures, diagnostics, tools, and complete repair/maintenance programs for OEMs.
Renewable Energy Segment
The Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Schneider Power, Inc. (Schneider Power), is a licensed electricity generator, developer and builder of renewable electricity generation facilities. Schneider Power develops, builds, owns and operates wind electricity generation facilities. It generates electrical power from wind turbines operating in Ontario, Canada under a long term Power Purchase Agreement with a Canadian-based renewable energy reseller. The Company owns and operates a 1.6 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Ontario, Canada. In addition, it has a portfolio of wind and solar farm projects in North America and the Caribbean with potential capacity in excess of one gigawatt (1,000 MW).
