RTI Surgical Inc., formerly RTI Biologics, Inc., incorporated in 1997, process human musculoskeletal and other tissue. It also processes bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament, fascia lata, pericardium, sclera and dermal tissue, and bovine animal tissue in producing allograft and xenograft implants utilizing BIOCLEANSE and TUTOPLAST sterilization processes, for distribution to hospitals and surgeons. It process at two facilities in Alachua, Florida and one facility in Neunkirchen, Germany and distributes its products and services in all 50 states and in over 30 countries worldwide. The Company processs human and bovine animal tissue and distribute the tissue through various distribution channels. Its lines of business are consists primarily of five product categories: sports medicine, spine, dental, surgical specialties, Bone graft substitutes (BGS) and general orthopedic. In July 2013, the Company announced that it has completed the acquisition of Pioneer Surgical Technology.
Sports Medicine
The Company’s principal sports medicine allografts are tendons for ligament reconstruction and its meniscal allografts for transplantation. Many of its sports medicine allografts utilize its pre-shape technology and are shaped to fit surgeon’s requirements making them easier and/or faster to implant. The Company’s sports medicine products are marketed domestically through its direct biologics representatives and through its network of independent distributors and internationally through a network of independent distributors.
Spine
The spine market for allografts includes precision machined implants and bone paste utilized in spinal procedures. Its spine allografts are marketed domestically through its non-exclusive relationships with Medtronic, Orthofix, Zimmer, Stryker, Aesculap, Alphatec and Integra. Medtronic is the Company’s principal distributor in the spine market. Zimmer distributes both traditional bone and specialty allografts, and bone paste for use in spinal surgery.
Dental
The Company provides various products, including cancellous and cortical bone, and human and bovine membranes. It provides these products primarily for dental procedures related to augmenting ridge restoration.
Surgical Specialties
The Company distributes implants for surgical specialties. Surgical specialties include hernia, breast reconstruction, urology, ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat (ENT).
BGS and general orthopedic
Surgeons principally use the Company’s allograft paste implants, which consists of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and in some cases a biologic gel carrier, in fracture treatment, bone and joint reconstruction and periodontal applications, such as ridge augmentation for dental implants. Its allograft paste implants are marketed under Osteofil by Medtronic, Puros RTU Paste by Zimmer and the Optefil, Opteform, Regenafil and Regenaform brands with Exactech. RTI distributes directly the BioSet family of paste products through its direct distributor force, Pioneer, and its international distribution network. The Company’s DBM Boat products are marketed under BIO DBM by Stryker.
The Company’s bone graft substitutes business also includes certain types of blended and milled bone allografts and xenografts, such as its demineralized bone matrix, cortical cancellous chips and ground cancellous chips, used in total hip and knee replacements and for various injuries. Its conventional allograft business includes a variety of allograft categories, including its intercalary grafts, such as its frozen femoral heads, which are used for cancer treatment procedures and hip and knee reconstruction. The Company also produces various types of fashioned bone, such as strips and shafts used for various orthopedic procedures.
The BioCleanse Tissue Sterilization Solution
The Company has developed and utilized in the United States the BioCleanse tissue sterilization process, which is an automated, pharmaceutical grade chemical sterilization process for musculoskeletal bone and certain soft tissue. This process is fully validated to kill or inactivate all classes of conventional pathogens, viruses, microbes, bacteria and fungi. Its BioCleanse process is used on its bone allografts and xenografts and its musculoskeletal soft tissue products. In addition to the safety advantage of BioCleanse, it provides the Company with a number of research and development opportunities, including the ability to introduce bone-growth factors and anti-bacterial, anti-viral and cancer fighting agents into its implants.
The TUTOPLAST Tissue Sterilization Solution
The TUTOPLAST tissue sterilization process utilizes solvent dehydration and chemical inactivation to remove blood, lipids and extraneous materials, inactivate viruses and prions, and break down ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) into fragments not capable of replication and disease transmission while preserving the biological and mechanical properties. It applies the TUTOPLAST process to two types of preserved allografts: soft tissue, consisting of fascia lata, fascia temporalis, pericardium, dermis and sclera, and bone tissue, consisting of various configurations of cancellous and cortical bone material. Processed pericardium, fascia lata and dermis are collagenous tissue used to repair, replace or line native connective tissue primarily in dental, ophthalmology, urology, plastic and reconstructive surgeries. Dermis is also used in hernia repair and pelvic floor reconstruction. Sclera is used in ophthalmology procedures, such as anterior and posterior segment patch grafting applications for glaucoma, retina and trauma surgery and oculoplastics, as well as contour wrapping of an orbital implant. Processed cortical and cancellous bone material is used in a range of applications in spine, orthopaedic and dental surgeries.
Tissue Recovery
The Company’s donor recovery groups recovers a range of tissue types from donors, including the fibula, femur, tibia, humerus, ilium, pericardium, fascia lata, dermis, sclera, tendons and ligaments. It also receives donated tissue from independently registered tissue recovery organizations. . It has relationships with over thirty tissue donor recovery agencies across the country.
The Company competes with Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF), AlloSource, Kinetic Concepts Inc., LifeNet, Medtronic, Integra and Wright.
