Banco Santander, S.A., incorporated on January 14, 1875, is a retail and commercial bank. The Bank's principal business is to attract deposits and provide loans. The Bank focuses its wholesale banking offer on providing services to its main customers in local markets. Its commercial model satisfies the needs of all types of customers: individuals with different income levels; companies of any size and different sectors of activity; private companies, and public institutions. The Banks segments include Continental Europe, United Kingdom, Latin America and United States. The Continental Europe segment covers all businesses in the Continental Europe. The United Kingdom segment includes the businesses developed by various units and branches in the country. The Latin America segment embraces all its financial activities conducted through its banks and subsidiaries in the region. The United States segment includes the holding company, Santander Holdings USA (SHUSA), the businesses of Santander Bank, Santander Consumer USA and Banco Santander Puerto Rico, the specialized unit of Banco Santander International and Spanish Branch of Santander in New York.
The activity of the operating units is distributed by type of business among Retail Banking, Santander Global Corporate Banking (SGCB) and Spain Real Estate Activity unit. The retail banking covers all customer banking businesses, including those of consumer, but not those of corporate banking, which are managed through Santander Global Corporate Banking. The results of the hedging positions in each country are also included, conducted within the sphere of each one's Assets and Liabilities Committee. The Santander Global Corporate Banking business reflects the revenues from global corporate banking, investment banking and markets around the world, including all treasuries managed globally (always after the appropriate distribution with Retail Banking customers), as well as equities business. The Corporate Centre area incorporates the centralized activities relating to equity stakes in financial companies, financial management of the structural exchange rate position, assumed within the sphere of the Banks Assets and Liabilities Committee, as well as management of liquidity and of shareholders' equity through issues. As the Bank's holding entity, this area manages all capital and reserves and allocations of capital and liquidity with the rest of businesses.
In Spain, the Bank renewed its commercial Website and launched a mobile application for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and companies, and Santander Watch, which allows customers to check their accounts and card transactions from smart watches. In Brazil it launched a plan for digital customers (Vale a pena ser digital) in order to inform customers of the Bank's digital offer. In the United States, the Bank launched its online bank for SMEs and companies, as well as Mobile Deposit Capture, which enables checks to be processed through a mobile phone.
Santander Consumer Finance (SCF) specializes in auto finance, loans to buy durable goods, personal loans and credit cards, and operates over 590 branches. It operates through 130,000 associated points-of-sale (car dealers and shops), and has various finance agreements with car and motorcycle manufacturers, as well as retail distribution groups. Santander Spain operates in retail, commercial and wholesale banking. Bank Zachodni WBK is the bank in Poland, which offers mobile and online banking and cards. Santander Totta is the bank in Portugal, which focuses on managing lending rates, market shares, particularly in companies, controlling nonperforming loans (NPLs). Santander UK is the bank in the United Kingdom. Santander Brazil is the private sector bank. Santander carries out retail banking in the northeast of the country as Santander Bank and consumer finance through Santander Consumer USA around the nation. The Bank has approximately 5,550 branches in Continental Europe, over 3,470 branches in Spain, approximately 720 branches in Poland, over 860 branches in the United Kingdom, approximately 5,840 branches in Latin America, over 3,440 branches in Brazil, approximately 1,380 branches in Mexico, over 470 branches in Chile, and approximately 780 branches in the United States.
