Banco Santander, S.A., incorporated on January 14, 1875, is a Spain-based banking company. The Bank's business segments include: Retail Banking; Global Wholesale Banking (GBM); Private Banking, Asset Management and Insurance; and Spain's run-off real estate. The Retail Banking segment includes customer banking businesses. The GBM segment includes global corporate banking, investment banking and markets. The Private Banking, Asset Management and Insurance include design and management of mutual and pension funds and insurance. The Spain's run-off real estate includes loans to customers in Spain.
The Bank has operations in Continental Europe, the United Kingdom, Latin America and United States. The Continental Europe operations includes retail banking business, wholesale banking, and private banking and asset management and insurance, as well as the unit of Runoff Real Estate Activity in Spain. As of December 31, 2014, the Bank had around 5,482 branches in Continental Europe. The United Kingdom operations include retail and wholesale banking, and private banking asset management and insurance. As of December 31, 2014, the Bank had around 929 branches in the United Kingdom. The Latin America operations include financial activities conducted through its subsidiary banks and subsidiaries. As of December 31, 2014, the Bank had around 5,729 branches in Latin America. It also includes the specialized units of Santander Private Banking, as an independent and globally managed unit, and New York's business. The United States operations include the businesses of Santander Bank and Santander Puerto Rico. It is also engaged in consumer finance business through its stake in Santander Consumer USA Inc. (SCUSA). As of December 31, 2014, the Bank had around 811 branches in the United States; Santander Bank had around 705 branches, and Santander Puerto Rico had 54 branches.
The Retail Banking segment includes customer banking businesses. Santander Bank and Banco Santander Puerto Rico conduct the retail banking.
Global Wholesale Banking (GBM)
The GBM segment includes global corporate banking, investment banking and markets across the world, including treasuries managed globally, both trading and distribution to customers. It also includes the equities business.
Private Banking, Asset Management and Insurance
The Private Banking, Asset Management and Insurance segment includes the design and management of mutual and pension funds and insurance, conducted in some cases through wholly owned units and in other through units in which it participates through joint ventures with specialists. It also includes private banking business.
Spain's run-off real estate
The Spain's run-off real estate includes loans to customers in Spain. The Bank offers loans to customers whose activity is real estate development, equity stakes in real estate companies and foreclosed assets.
