Starbucks Corporation, incorporated on November 4, 1985, is the roaster, marketer and retailer of specialty coffee. The Company purchases and roasts coffees that it sells, along with coffee, tea and other beverages, and a range of fresh food items, through Company-operated stores. The Company also sells a range of coffee and tea products and licenses its trademarks through other channels, such as licensed stores, grocery and national foodservice accounts. The Company operates through four segment: Americas, which includes the United States, Canada, and Latin America; Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA); China/Asia Pacific (CAP), and Channel Development. In addition to its Starbucks Coffee brand, it also sells goods and services under the brands, including Teavana, Tazo, Seattle's Best Coffee, Evolution Fresh, La Boulange and Ethos.
The Company's Americas, EMEA, and CAP segments include both Company-operated and licensed stores. The Americas and EMEA segments include certain foodservice accounts, primarily in Canada and the United Kingdom. The Company's Americas segment also includes its La Boulange retail stores. The Company's Channel Development segment includes roasted whole bean and ground coffees, Tazo teas, Starbucks and Tazo branded single-serve products, a range of ready-to-drink beverages, such as Frappuccino beverages, Starbucks Doubleshot espresso drinks, Starbucks Refreshers beverages, and other branded products sold worldwide through channels, such as grocery stores, warehouse clubs, specialty retailers, convenience stores, and the United States foodservice accounts.
The Company's stores offer an assortment of fresh food offerings. The Company offers Evolution Fresh cold-pressed juice, iced coffee, iced tea, chocolate beverages, smoothies and kids' drinks, among others. The Company offers breakfast, bakery, salads and sandwiches. The Company offers coffees, syrups and sauces online. The Company also offers food under the categories, such as under 200 calories, under 350 calories and food with 10-grams fat or less, among others.
The Company offers Starbucks Card and other branded stored value card programs. Stored value cards are issued to customers when they initially load them with an account balance. They can be obtained in its Company-operated and licensed stores in North America, China, Brazil, and its markets in the EMEA segment, as well as online, through the Starbucks mobile application, and through other retailers, including a number of other international locations. The customers can access their card balances by utilizing their stored value card or the Starbucks mobile application in participating stores, which also includes certain Teavana, Evolution Fresh and La Boulange locations. The Company sells certain equipment, such as coffee brewers and espresso machines, to its licensees for use in their operations. For Teavana, Seattle's Best Coffee, as well as Starbucks stores within certain markets, the Company also uses traditional franchising.
