Select Medical Holdings Corporation, incorporated on October 14, 2004, is an operator of specialty hospitals and outpatient rehabilitation clinics in the United States. The Company, through its contract therapy business, provides medical rehabilitation services on a contracted basis to nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living and senior care centers, schools and work sites. The Company operates through three business segments: specialty hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation and Concentra. Its Other activities include corporate services and other minority investments in other healthcare-related businesses, which include investments in companies that provide specialized technology, services to healthcare entities and providers of complementary services.
The Company is an operator of specialty hospitals in the United States. It operates approximately 127 facilities in over 27 states, including approximately 109 long term acute care hospitals, or LTCHs. The Company operates approximately 5,172 available licensed beds and employed approximately 22,100 people in specialty hospitals segment, consisting primarily of registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. The Company operates some of its LTCHs as a hospital within a hospital, or an HIH. An LTCH that operates as an HIH leases space from a general acute care hospital, or host hospital, and operates as a separately licensed hospital within the host hospital, or on the same campus as the host hospital. It operates over 110 LTCHs. Of over 110 LTCHs, approximately 80 are operating as HIHs and over 30 are operating as free-standing hospitals.
Patients are admitted to its specialty hospitals from general acute care hospitals. These patients have specialized needs, and serious and often complex medical conditions, such as respiratory failure, neuromuscular disorders, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, strokes, non-healing wounds, cardiac disorders, renal disorders and cancer. The average length of stay for patients in its specialty hospitals is approximately 27 days in the Company's LTCHs and over 14 days in inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs). When a patient is referred to one of the Company's hospitals by a physician, case manager, discharge planner, health maintenance organization or insurance company, it performs a clinical assessment of the patient to determine if the patient meets its criteria for admission. Based on the determinations reached in this clinical assessment, an admission decision is made.
The Company is an operator of outpatient rehabilitation clinics in the United States, with over 1,038 facilities in approximately 30 states and the District of Columbia. Each of its clinics is located in a medical complex or retail location. It also provides medical rehabilitative services to residents and patients of nursing homes, hospitals, schools, assisted living and senior care centers and worksites. The Company provides rehabilitative services to approximately 420 contracted locations in over 30 states and the District of Columbia. The Company provides physical, occupational and speech rehabilitation programs and services. It also provides certain specialized programs, such as functional programs for work related injuries, hand therapy, post-concussion rehabilitation and athletic training services. It offers services for the patients suffering from musculoskeletal impairments, which are associated with accidents, sports injuries, work related injuries or post-operative orthopedic and other medical conditions. It also provides services designed to prevent short term disabilities from becoming chronic conditions.
The Company is a provider of occupational health services in the United States. The Company operates approximately 300 medical centers, over 140 onsite clinics at employer worksites and over 33 community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in approximately 40 states. The Company offers a range of occupational and consumer health services through its medical centers and onsite clinics. Occupational health services include workers' compensation injury care, as well as employer services, clinical testing, wellness programs and preventative care. Consumer health consists of non-employer, patient-directed treatment of injuries and illnesses. Its consumer service offerings include urgent care, wellness programs and preventative care. The Company's services at the CBOCs include primary care, specialty care, subspecialty care, mental health and pharmacy benefits.
