Staples, Inc. (Staples), incorporated on January 23, 1986, is an office products company. The Company operates in three business segments: North American Stores & Online, North American Commercial and International Operations. As of February 02, 2013, the Company served businesses of all sizes and consumers in North America, Europe, Australia, South America and Asia. The Company’s North American Commercial segment consists of the United States and Canadian businesses that sell and deliver office products and services directly to businesses and includes Staples Advantage and Quill.com. The Company's International Operations segment consists of businesses in 23 countries in Europe, Australia, South America and Asia. The Company offers more than 10,000 own brand products and services, including an assortment of products with various environmental attributes, which includes its Sustainable Earth brand products. In October 2013, Staples Inc completed the acquisition of Runa. In July 2014, Staples Inc acquired PNI Digital Media Inc.
North American Stores & Online
North American Stores & Online focuses on offering easy-to-shop stores and websites with products that are in-stock and easy to find, and courteous, helpful and knowledgeable sales associates to support customers across all channels. The Company operates a portfolio of retail store formats, tailored to the characteristics of each location. The Dover superstore represents the majority of its United States. store base. The Dover design appeals to the customer with an open store interior that provides a view of its selection and makes it easier to find products.
North American Commercial
The Company’s North American Commercial segment consists of the United States and Canadian business units that sell and deliver office products and services directly to businesses, including Staples Advantage and Quill.com. Its Staples Advantage business focuses on serving the needs of mid-sized businesses and organizations as well as Fortune 1000 companies. Through its contract sales force, it offers customized pricing and payment terms, usage reporting, the stocking of certain items, an assortment of products with various environmental attributes and services. Quill.com is an Internet and catalog business with a targeted approach to servicing the needs of small and mid-sized businesses in the United States. Quill.com also operates Medical Arts Press, Inc., an Internet and catalog business offering specialized office supplies and products for health care professionals. Quill.com is viewed separately from its Staples.com business in that its customer base is different and it relies on its direct sales force.
Staples’s European Office Products business represents a multi-channel portfolio serving contract, retail, Internet and catalog customers in 16 countries. The Company’s contract business includes sizable operations in Scandinavia, Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. It operates 283 retail stores with the concentration of stores in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal. It operates Internet and direct mail catalog businesses with a concentration of sales in France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Its Corporate Express Australia Limited serves contract customers in Australia and New Zealand. In addition to its contract business, it operates a public Website, which targets small business and home office customers.
The Company competes with Office Depot, OfficeMax, Lyreco, Walmart, Target, Tesco, Costco, Best Buy, Apple, FedEx Office and Amazon.com.
