The E. W. Scripps Company, incorporated on December 1, 1987, is a media enterprise with interests in television stations, newspapers and local and national digital media sites. The Company’s media businesses provide content and advertising services through digital platforms, including the Internet, smartphones and tablets. The Company operates its business through three segments, including television, newspapers and syndication and other. The Company offers its audiences and businesses a range of television, print and digital media brands. It owns 19 local television stations, as well as daily newspapers in 13 markets across the United States. It also runs a range of local and national digital journalism and information businesses including digital video news service Newsy. It also produces television programming, runs an investigative reporting newsroom in Washington, D.C., and serves as the steward of educational program, the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The Television segment includes 10 ABC-affiliated stations, three NBC-affiliated stations, one independent station that it operates as a duopoly with its Kansas City NBC affiliate and five Azteca America affiliates. The Company’s television stations reach approximately 13% of the nation’s households. Its television stations earn revenue from the sale of advertising time to local and national advertisers and retransmission fees received from cable operators and satellite carriers.
National television networks offer affiliates a range of programs and sell the advertising within those programs. In addition to network programs, it broadcasts locally produced programs, syndicated programs, sporting events and other programs of interest in each station's market. News is the primary program of its locally produced programming.
The Company operates daily and community newspapers in 13 markets across the United States. The Company’s newspapers earn revenue from the sale of advertising to local and national advertisers and newspaper subscription fees. Its newspapers operate in mid-size markets, focusing on news coverage within their local markets. Advertising and subscription revenues provide substantially all of the operating revenues for each newspaper market, and employee, newspaper distribution and newsprint costs are the primary expenses at each newspaper.
The Company’s Digital advertising and marketing services include advertising on its newspaper Internet sites, digital advertising provided through audience-extension programs, such as its arrangement with Yahoo! and other digital marketing services it offers to its local advertising customers, such as managing their search engine marketing campaigns.
Syndication and other
Syndication and other include syndication of news features and comics. Under the trade name United Media, the Company distributes news columns, comics and other features for the newspaper industry. Newspapers pay a weekly fee for their use of the features. It provides syndication services for the news features and comics of United Media. It also provides editorial and production services, sales and marketing, sales support and customer service and distribution and fulfillment for all the news features and comics of United Media.
