SunCoke Energy, Inc., incorporated on December 8, 2010, is an independent producer of coke in the Americas, which is a principal raw material in the blast furnace steelmaking process. The Company also provides coal handling and/or mixing services at its Coal Logistics terminals. The Company's segments include Domestic Coke, Brazil Coke, India Coke, Coal Logistics, and Corporate and Other. The Company owns and operates over five cokemaking facilities in the eastern and midwestern regions of the United States. The Company controls approximately 110 million tons of coal mining reserves in Virginia and West Virginia.
The Company's Domestic Coke segment consists of its Jewell, Indiana Harbor, Haverhill, Granite City and Middletown cokemaking and heat recovery operations located in Vansant, Virginia; East Chicago, Indiana; Franklin Furnace, Ohio; Granite City, Illinois, and Middletown, Ohio, respectively. Each of these facilities produces coke, and Jewell and Indiana Harbor also recovers waste heat, which is converted to steam or electricity through a similar production process.
The Company's Brazil Coke segment operates a cokemaking facility located in Vitoria, Brazil for a project company. The Brazil Coke segment earns income from the Brazilian facility through licensing and operating fees payable to the Company under long-term contracts with the local project company and an annual preferred dividend on its preferred stock investment from the project company guaranteed by the Brazil subsidiary of ArcelorMittal USA, Inc. (ArcelorMittal).
The Company's India Coke segment consists of its cokemaking joint venture with Visa Steel Limited (VISA Steel) in Odisha, India. The India Coke segment purchases metallurgical coal to be used in the production of coke. The VISA Steel has a cokemaking capacity of over 440 thousand tons of coke per year.
The Company's Coal Logistics segment consists of its coal handling and/or mixing service operations in East Chicago, Indiana; Ceredo, West Virginia; Belle, West Virginia; Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and Convent, Louisiana. Its Coal Logistics business provides its services to steel, coke (including some of its domestic cokemaking facilities), electric utility and coal mining customers. The Coal Logistics business provides coal handling and storage services to Murray American Coal (Murray) and Foresight Energy LP (Foresight). Its Coal Logistics business has a collective capacity to mix and/or transload over 40 million tons of coal annually and has storage capacity of approximately three million tons.
