Symantec Corporation (Symantec) provides security, storage and systems management solutions to help businesses and consumers secure and manage their information. The Company conducts its business in three geographic regions: Americas, which includes United States, Canada, and Latin America; EMEA, which includes Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific Japan (APJ). Its delivery network includes direct, inside, and channel sales resources that support its ecosystem of more than 40,000 partners, as well as various relationships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Internet service providers (ISPs), and retail and online stores. It provides customers with software and services that protect, manage and control information risks related to security, backup and recovery, storage, compliance, and systems management. The Company operates primarily in three markets within the software sector: security, storage and systems management.
During the fiscal year ended April 03, 2009 (fiscal 2009), the Company completed six acquisitions: Mi5, Inc., MessageLabs Group Limited, PC Tools Pty Ltd., nSuite Technologies, Inc., SwapDrive, Inc. and AppStream, Inc. During fiscal 2009, the Company’s offering in its enterprise business includes advanced electronic discovery and data de-duplication capabilities in archiving platform, end-to-end coverage for the information technology (IT) compliance lifecycle, including policy management, technical and procedural controls assessment in its compliance solution; support for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V in its backup and recovery solution; offering visibility into IT assets, simplified day-to-day manageability and improved end-user productivity in its systems management solutions, and workspace management in its endpoint virtualization solution. During fiscal 2009, it had five operating segments: Consumer, Security and Compliance, Storage and Server Management, Services, and Other.
Consumer Products
Symantec’s Consumer Products segment provides suites and services that include Internet security, personal computer (PC) tuneup, and backup for individual users and home offices. The Company's primary consumer products are Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus and Norton 360.
The Company competes with Kaspersky Lab, McAfee, Inc. (McAfee), Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft), Mozy, Inc. (Mozy), Carbonite, Inc. and Trend Micro Inc. (Trend Micro).
Security and Compliance
The Company’s Security and Compliance focuses on helping its customers standardize, automate security activities. Symantec’s primary enterprise security solutions include Symantec Endpoint Protection, Symantec Data Loss Prevention, Control Compliance Suite and Symantec Brightmail Gateway. Symantec Enterprise Vault optimizes storage by reducing long-term storage of this data in an easy to access format.
The Company competes with LANDesk Software, Inc., McAfee, Microsoft, and Trend Micro.
Storage and Server Management
The Company’s Storage and Server Management segment focuses on providing enterprise customers with storage management, high availability, and backup and recovery solutions across heterogeneous storage and server platforms. These solutions enable companies to standardize on a single layer of infrastructure software that works on distributed operating system and supports storage device, database and application. Its primary storage and server management solutions address the areas, such as storage management and high availability, and backup and recovery. Storage management and high availability products include Veritas Storage Foundation, Veritas CommandCentral Storage and Veritas Cluster Server. Backup and recovery backup products include Veritas NetBackup, Veritas NetBackup PureDisk, Symantec Backup Exec and Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery.

Services

Symantec Consulting provides advisory, product enablement and residency services to enable customers to assess, design, transform and operate their infrastructure. Education Services provides a range of programs, including technical training and security awareness training. Symantec Protection Network backup and recovery offerings provide customers the flexibility to manage their business using online services or hybrid onsite and in-the-cloud solutions. These services include Symantec Managed Security Services, Symantec Managed Backup and MessageLabs Email Security Solutions.
