Total S.A. (Total), incorporated on January 1, 1954, is an oil and gas company. The Company has three segments: an Upstream segment, including the activities of the exploration and production of hydrocarbons, and the activities of gas and power; a Refining & Chemicals segment constituting an industrial hub consisting of the activities of refining, petrochemicals and specialty chemicals, and also includes the activities of oil trading and shipping, and a Marketing & Services segment, including the activities of supply and marketing in the field of petroleum products, as well as the activity of New Energies. The Company's Corporate segment includes holdings operating and financial activities. The Company operates in the renewable energies and power generation sectors.
The Company has exploration and production activities in over 50 countries, and produces oil or gas in approximately 30 countries. The Gas division conducts activities downstream from production related to natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as well as power generation and trading, and other activities. Exploration and Production division focuses on discovering and developing oil and gas fields. The Company's combined proved reserves of oil and gas are over 11,580 Million Barrels of Oil Equivalent (Mboe). The Company's reserves are located in Europe, including Norway and the United Kingdom; Africa, including Angola, Gabon, Nigeria and the Republic of the Congo; the Americas, including Canada, Argentina, the United States and Venezuela; the Middle East, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen; Asia-Pacific, including Australia, and Kazakhstan and Russia. The average daily production of liquids and natural gas is approximately 2,340 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboe/d). Total also holds interests in exploration licenses in South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Refining & Chemicals
The Company's petrochemicals business includes base petrochemicals, including olefins and aromatics, and polymer derivatives, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and hydrocarbon resins, and specialty chemicals business, which includes elastomer processing and electroplating chemistry. The Company has a refining capacity of over 2,240 thousand barrels per day (kb/d). The Refining & Chemicals segment manages refining operations located in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Asia, with a capacity of over 2,160 kb/d. The petrochemicals businesses are located in Europe, the United States, Qatar, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The Company operates a range of refineries in Western Europe, including a refinery in Antwerp, Belgium; approximately five in France in Donges, Feyzin, Gonfreville, Grandpuits and La Mede; a refinery in Immingham in the United Kingdom, and a refinery in Leuna, Germany. It has stakes in the Zeeland refinery in the Netherlands and the Trecate refinery in Italy through its interest in TotalErg. The Company is involved in the development of activities associated with the conversion of biomass to polymers. It produces biofuel, namely hydrotreated vegetable oils for incorporated into diesel, and ether produced from ethanol and isobutene (ETBE) for inclusion into diesel. The specialty chemicals businesses include elastomer processing (Hutchinson) and electroplating chemistry (Atotech). The specialty chemicals businesses serve the automation, construction, electronics, aerospace and convenience goods markets.
Marketing & Services
The Company's Marketing & Services segment is engaged in the development of its oil products distribution activities and related services around the world. The Company's areas of activities include retail, lubricants and professional markets. Its retail area has a network of over 16,000 service stations. The Company focuses on the sale of fuels and oil products. It offers a range of services in its stores and service stations, such as car wash, catering and car servicing. The Company has over 40 blending plants. It is engaged in the distribution of products and services for professional markets. The Company holds interests in approximately five refineries in Africa and a refinery in Europe.
