Trinity Industries, Inc., incorporated on August 4, 1986, is a diversified industrial company that owns a range of businesses providing products and services to the energy, transportation, chemical and construction sectors. The Company's products and services include railcars and railcar parts; parts and steel components; the leasing, management and maintenance of railcars; highway products; aggregates; inland barges; structural wind towers; steel utility structures; storage and distribution containers, and trench shields and shoring products. The Company's segments include the Rail Group, Railcar Leasing and Management Services Group, Construction Products Group, Energy Equipment Group, Inland Barge Group and All Other Groups.
The Company's Rail Group is a manufacturer of freight and tank railcars in North America used for transporting a range of liquids, gases and dry cargo. It manufactures a line of railcars, including autorack cars, which transport finished automobiles and light trucks; box cars, which carry a range of bulk cargo, such as auto parts, paper and food products; covered hopper cars, which transport commodities, such as industrial sand and cement, grain products, dry fertilizer and plastics; gondola cars, which are used for coal service, while other gondola cars carry bulk commodities, such as scrap metal, aggregate, ores and finished steel; intermodal cars, which transport shipping containers in single or double stacked configurations, as well as truck trailers; open hopper cars, which transport coal, aggregates and other similar products, and tank cars, in which non-pressurized tank cars transport a range of liquid commodities, including chemicals, food products and petroleum products, while pressurized tank cars are used to transport liquefied gases. The Rail Group also manufactures and sells various railcar parts and components used in manufacturing and repairing railcars, including couplers, axles and other equipment. It provides railcar maintenance services at various facilities in the United States.
Railcar Leasing and Management Services Group
The Company's Railcar Leasing and Management Services Group is a provider of rail industry services in North America. The Company, through its subsidiaries, Trinity Industries Leasing Company (TILC), TRIP Rail Holdings LLC (TRIP Holdings) and RIV 2013 Rail Holdings LLC (RIV 2013), offers operating leases for tank and freight railcars. In addition, TILC originates and manages railcar leases for third-party investor-owned funds and provides fleet maintenance and management services to industrial shippers. The railcars in its lease fleet are leased to industrial shippers and railroads. These companies operate in the chemical, agricultural, automotive, and energy industries, among others. The lease fleet of its subsidiaries includes approximately 76,760 owned or leased railcars.
Construction Products Group
The Company's Construction Products Group, through its subsidiaries, manufactures highway products, as well as other steel products for infrastructure-related projects and mines, and produces aggregates. The Company's highway products business includes manufacturing of guardrail, crash cushions and other protective barriers. It sells highway products in Canada, Mexico and throughout the United States and it exports highway products to over 60 countries. The Company does not perform any installation services with respect to its highway products, except in Mexico. It is a producer and distributor of lightweight and natural aggregates, including expanded shale and clay; crushed stone; sand and gravel; asphalt rock, and various other products in the western and southwestern United States. The Company's Construction Products Group caters to concrete producers; commercial, residential and highway contractors; manufacturers of masonry products, and state and local municipalities. It also manufactures a line of trench shields and shoring products for the construction industry.
Energy Equipment Group
The Company's Energy Equipment Group segment, through its subsidiaries, manufactures structural wind towers; utility steel structures for electricity transmission and distribution; cryogenic storage and distribution containers, and tank heads for pressure and non-pressure vessels. The Company is a manufacturer of structural wind towers used in the wind energy market in North America. These towers are manufactured in the United States and Mexico to customer specifications and are installed by its customers. It caters to wind turbine producers. It manufactures steel utility structures for electricity transmission and distribution, which are used by municipalities and other local and state governmental entities, as well as by public and private utilities. The Company manufactures of storage and distribution containers in North America. It manufactures these products in the United States, Mexico and Canada. It markets a portion of its products in Mexico under the brand name of TATSA. The Company's storage and distribution containers support the oil, gas and chemical industries and are used by industrial plants, utilities, residences and small businesses in suburban and rural areas. Additionally, it manufactures fertilizer storage and distribution containers for bulk storage, farm storage, and the application and distribution of anhydrous ammonia.
The Company also manufactures cryogenic tanks for the distribution of industrial gases and liquefied natural gas. Its storage and distribution container products range from approximately nine-gallon containers for motor fuel use to over 1.8 million-gallon bulk storage spheres. The Company sells its storage and distribution containers to dealers and industrial users. In the United States, it delivers storage and distribution containers to its customers engaged in installing and filling the containers. Additionally, the Company manufactures and sells oil and gas process and storage equipment, including various types of containers, separators and treaters used at the well site and in midstream locations. The Company also manufactures tank heads, which are pressed metal components used in the manufacturing of its finished products, both pressure rated and non-pressure rated, depending on their intended use. It uses a significant portion of the tank heads it manufactures in the production of its railcars and storage, and distribution containers. The Company also sells its tank heads to a range of other manufacturers.
Inland Barge Group
The Company's Inland Barge Group, through its subsidiaries, manufactures inland barges and fiberglass barge covers. It manufactures a range of dry cargo barges, such as deck barges and open or covered hopper barges that transport various commodities, such as grain, coal and aggregates. It also manufactures tank barges used to transport liquids, including chemicals and a range of petroleum products. Its fiberglass reinforced lift covers are used for grain barges. Its barge manufacturing facilities are located along the United States inland river systems. It caters to commercial marine transportation companies.
The Company's All Other segment includes its captive insurance and transportation companies. It also includes legal, environmental and maintenance costs associated with non-operating facilities and other peripheral businesses.
