The Company has integrated the manufacturing of ingots, wafers and solar cells for use in its photovoltaic (PV) module production. Its PV modules provide electric power for residential, commercial, industrial and other applications. The Company also develops, designs, constructs, operates and sells solar power projects that primarily use the solar modules the Company manufactures. The Company operates through two segments: manufacturing segment and the solar power projects segment. It build its PV modules to general specifications, as well as to its customers' and end-users' specifications. The Company sells and markets its products across the world, including China and the United States. The Company primarily sells its products to wholesalers, power plant developers and operators, and PV system integrators. The Company conducts its operations through Changzhou Trina Solar Energy Co., Ltd. (Trina China) and other subsidiaries in the People's Republic of China (PRC).
The Company completed and connected approximately 425 megawatts of build-to-own projects in China, completed and connected approximately 210.9 megawatts of build-to-sell projects in China, and completed and sold approximately 50 megawatts of build-to-sell projects in Europe. The Company has an annualized in-house manufacturing capacity of ingots of approximately 2,300 megawatts, wafers of approximately 1,800 megawatts, cells of approximately 3,500 megawatts and modules of approximately 5,000 megawatts. The Company contracts toll services from third party manufacturers to process ingots and wafers and sources wafers from its suppliers and strategic partners. The Company has developed relationships with various domestic and international suppliers of ingots and wafers.
The Company's manufacturing segment designs, develops, manufactures and sells PV modules, and integrates the manufacturing of ingots, wafers and solar cells for use in its PV module production. The manufacturing segment comprises of the production of mono- and multi-crystalline silicon ingots, wafers, cells and related products and the subsequent assembly and marketing of PV modules. The Company produces standard monocrystalline PV modules ranging from between 215 watts and 230 watts to between 275 watts and 295 watts in power output for over 60 cell, and between 325 watts and 350 watts for over 72 cell and multicrystalline PV modules ranging from between 260 watts and 270 watts to between 305 watts to 320 watts in power output, built to general specifications for use in a range of residential, commercial, industrial and other solar power generation systems. The Company assembles PV modules either from monocrystalline or multicrystalline cells. The Company also designs and produces PV modules based on its customers' and end users' specifications. Its PV modules are sealed, weatherproof and withstand high levels of ultraviolet radiation and moisture. The Company sells its module products under its own brand.
Solar power projects segment
The Company's solar power projects segment designs, constructs, operates and sells solar power projects in China, the United Kingdom, the United States and other European and Asian countries. The Company engages in the full life cycle of solar projects development, including project selection, design, financing, permitting, engineering, procurement, construction, installation, monitoring, operation and maintenance. The Company either sells completed solar projects to third party buyers, or operates them under the power purchase agreements (PPAs), or other contractual arrangements with utility or grid operators. Its China solar power project business unit (SBU) focuses on PV power plants in China, including the development and sales, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and operation and maintenance, and the international SBU focuses on developing PV power plants in key international markets.
The Company competes with First Solar Inc., Golden Concord Holdings Limited, JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd., Xi'an LONGi Silicon Materials Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Canadian Solar Inc. and JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd.
