TIM Participacoes SA (TIM), incorporated on May 22, 1998, is a Brazil-based holding company engaged in the telecommunications segment. Through its subsidiaries, TIM Celular SA (TIM Celular) and Intelig Telecomunicacoes Ltda (Intelig), it provides telecommunication services throughout Brazil. TIM Celular and Intelig are active as Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN) providers in the local and national and international long-distance modalities in all Brazilian states. Additionally, TIM Celular provides multimedia communication services and personal mobile services. Through the global system for mobile communication (GSM) technology, the Company reaches approximately 94% of the urban population, with presence in 3,203 cities. TIM also offers mobile data services and a third generation (3G) network, as well as international roaming agreements, multimedia messaging services and blackberry services.
Monthly Subscription Charges and Network Usage Services
TIM receives a monthly subscription fee under the postpaid mobile plan which varies based on the usage limits under the plan. The Company divides the coverage areas into certain areas defined as home registration areas. Calls within the same home registration area are considered local calls. Each of the customers is registered as a user of one of our home registration areas.
Automatic national roaming permits the customers to use their mobile telephones on the networks of other mobile service providers while traveling or roaming in the limited areas of Brazil that are outside of the network, complementing the mobile coverage. Similarly, TIM provides mobile telecommunications service to customers of other mobile service providers when those customers place or receive calls while in the network.
The Company receive interconnection revenues in connection with any call originating from another service provider’s network, mobile or fixed line, which is received by any mobile customer, of ours or of another provider’s, while using the network. The Company charges the service provider from whose network the call originates an interconnection fee for every minute the network is used in connection with the call.
Telecommunications customers in Brazil are able to select long distance carriers on a per-call basis under the Carrier Selection, or the CSP program. For mobile customers, TIM offers long distance services to the customers throughout Brazil through the wholly owned subsidiary TIM Celular.
The Company offers directly or through agreements entered into with third parties, including short message services or text messaging, multimedia messaging services, push-mail, video call, turbo mail, wireless access protocol (WAP) downloads, Web browsing, business data solutions, songs, games, television access, voicemail, conference calling, chats and other content to the postpaid and prepaid customers. Under various postpaid mobile plans some services are included in the monthly subscription charge at a specified level of usage. During the year ended December 31, 2009, the value-added services represented 12% of the Company’s gross revenues.
The Company competes with Vivo, Claro, Oi, Brasil Telecom, Telefonica and Embratel.
