United Rentals, Inc. (United Rentals), incorporated on July 20, 1998, is a holding company engaged in the business of equipment rental. The Company conducts its operations through its wholly owned subsidiary, United Rentals (North America), Inc. (URNA), and its subsidiaries. It operates in two segments: general rentals and trench safety, power and heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), and pump solutions. The general rentals segment consists of around 12 geographic regions: Eastern Canada, Gulf South, Industrial (which serves the geographic Gulf region), Mid-Atlantic, Mid-Central, Midwest, Mountain West, Northeast, Pacific West, South, Southeast and Western Canada, and operates throughout the United States and Canada. The trench safety, power and HVAC, and pump solutions segment includes the rental of construction products and related services. The trench safety, power and HVAC, and pump solutions segment consists: the Trench Safety region, which rents trench safety equipment, such as trench shields, aluminum hydraulic shoring systems, slide rails, crossing plates, construction lasers and line testing equipment for underground work; the Power and HVAC region, which rents power and HVAC equipment, such as portable diesel generators, electrical distribution equipment, and temperature control equipment, including heating and cooling equipment, and the Pump Solutions region, which rents pumps used by energy and petrochemical customers. The trench safety, power and HVAC, and pump solutions segment’s customers include construction companies involved in infrastructure projects, municipalities and industrial companies. This segment operates throughout the United States and in Canada.
The Company’s products and services include equipment rental, sales of rental equipment, sales of new equipment, contractor supplies sales, and related services. It offers approximately 3,300 classes of equipment on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis to construction and industrial companies, manufacturers, utilities, municipalities, homeowners, Government entities and other customers. The equipment, which it offers includes general construction and industrial equipment; aerial work platforms; general tools and light equipment; power HVAC equipment; trench safety equipment, and pumps, which are used by energy and petrochemical customers.
The Company sells used equipment through its national and export sales forces, which can access resale markets across its network; at auction; through brokers, and directly to manufacturers. It also sells used equipment through its Website, which includes an online database of used equipment available for sale. It sells equipment for various equipment manufacturers. It sells a variety of contractor supplies, including construction consumables, tools, and small equipment and safety supplies. The Company also offers repair, maintenance and rental protection services and sells parts for equipment that is owned by its customers. Its customer service network consists of around 881 rental locations in the United States and Canada, as well as call centers and online capabilities. As of December 31, 2014, its fleet of rental equipment included approximately 430,000 units.
General construction and industrial equipment include backhoes, skid-steer loaders, forklifts, earthmoving equipment and materials handling equipment. In 2014, general construction and industrial equipment accounted for approximately 43% of its equipment rental revenue. Aerial work platforms include boom lifts and scissor lifts. In 2014, aerial work platforms accounted for approximately 33% of its equipment rental revenue. General tools and light equipment include pressure washers, water pumps and power tools. In 2014, general tools and light equipment accounted for approximately 10% of its equipment rental revenue. Power and HVAC equipment include portable diesel generators, electrical distribution equipment, and temperature control equipment. In 2014, power and HVAC equipment accounted for approximately 6% of its equipment rental revenue.
Trench safety equipment include trench shields, aluminum hydraulic shoring systems, slide rails, crossing plates, construction lasers and line testing equipment for underground work. In 2014, trench safety equipment accounted for approximately 5% of the Company’s equipment rental revenue. Pumps used by energy and petrochemical customers accounted for approximately 3% of its equipment rental revenue.
