Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Vitesse), incorporated in February 1987, is a supplier of integrated circuits (ICs) that are utilized primarily by manufacturers of networking systems for carrier and enterprise networking applications. Vitesse designs, develops, and markets a portfolio of networking and connectivity IC solutions. Its customers include networking original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODM's) worldwide, such as Alcatel-Lucent, Accton, Ciena, Cisco Systems, Dell, IBM, Ericsson, Fiberhome, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, Huawei Technologies, Juniper Networks, Nokia Siemens Networks, Tellabs and ZTE. The Company develops and manufactures a variety of products that are marketed to carrier and enterprise networking, as well as data center infrastructure OEMs. Its product categories include Transport Processing Product Line, Ethernet Switching Product Line and Connectivity Product Line.
Ethernet Switching Product Line
The Company’s Ethernet Switching product line addresses gigabit Ethernet and 10 gigabit Ethernet applications in carrier and enterprise markets. This product line consists of carrier Ethernet switch engines, enterprise Ethernet switches, Ethernet media access controllers (MACs), and Ethernet transceivers (Copper PHYs). During the fiscal year ended September 30, 2011 (fiscal 2011) and 2010, the Company introduced two switch engine families, Jaguar and Caracal, to address a range of applications in the access and edge of the networks. These applications include customer premise equipment (CPE), access network equipment, wireless base stations, mobile access equipment, including fiber and microwave wireless backhaul equipment and metro networking equipment.
In Enterprise applications, the Company’s Ethernet switches are targeted at desktop, workgroup, and local area network (LAN) infrastructure within small-medium enterprise (SME) and small-medium business (SMB) markets and enable these systems to migrate to gigabit Ethernet speeds. As of September 30, 2011, the Company shipped over 175 million Gigabit Ethernet ports for Enterprise applications. Ethernet MACs provide addressing and channel control mechanisms that make it possible for several network nodes to communicate within a multipoint network. The Company’s MAC products are designed for use in Enterprise class modular Ethernet switch platforms, as well as in Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH (EoS) and optical transport network (OTN) systems used in access, metro, and long-haul Carrier networking systems. Ethernet MACs provide single-chip solutions for both gigabit Ethernet and 10 gigabit Ethernet applications.
Copper PHYs allow transmission of 10/100/1000 BASE-T data over Category five (Cat5) copper cable and fiber optic cabling. This technology is used in personal computing, home electronics, and LAN applications to enterprise and data center applications, and in carrier networking applications. The Company offers a range of products in this category, including single, quad and octal devices. SimpliPHY Ethernet transceivers (Copper physical layer (PHY)) features ActiPHY and PerfectReach and EEE technology that provide energy savings of up to 80%. During the fiscal 2011, the Company introduced two new products with IEEE 1588v2 packet timing and synchronization capabilities. Gigabit Ethernet PHYs offers enhanced packet timing and synchronization technology, supporting IEEE standards 1588v2 and Y.1731.
Connectivity Product Line
The Company’s connectivity product line includes mixed-signal physical layer devices for connection of systems via optical fiber, copper cable, or backplanes. These devices are deployed across a range of applications and markets. Connectivity product lines include physical media devices (PMDs), PHYs, crosspoint switches, and signal integrity devices.
A PMD is a mixed signal device that connects an electrical signal to an optical component. The Company offers laser drivers, transimpedance amplifiers and post-amplifiers operating at speeds ranging from 1.25 gigabit per second to 14 gigabit per second. These products are used in a variety of applications from carrier long-haul and metro networks to enterprise gigabit Ethernet and 10 gigabit Ethernet networks including storage networks and systems. It also develops products for application in passive optical networks (PON) that enable fiber-to-the-home deployments. It sells these products to optical module manufacturers who service equipment manufacturers, or directly to OEMs, who build discrete board-based solutions.
A PHY converts high-speed analog signals to low-speed digital signals in fiber optic, copper cable, and backplane applications. The Company’s PHY products feature VScope, an integrated equalization waveform viewing technology and FlexEQ, an adaptive equalization and electronic dispersion compensation technology. The Company offers a line of PHY products for the Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and fibre channel markets at speeds ranging from 155 megabytes per second to 14 gigabit per second. The Company’s crosspoint switches provide switching matrices from 4x4 to 144x144 matrices with performance up to 11 gigabit per second. The Company provides a portfolio of devices for generic signal integrity applications, including sending very-high speed signals over backplanes and copper cables. These devices include repeater and re-timer ICs that support data rates from 155 megabytes per second to 14 gigabit per second for protocols, including, gigabit Ethernet, fibre channel, and SAS/SATA. Its products are used in a variety of systems in carrier, enterprise, data center, and high-definition video applications, both within systems, as well as connecting between systems.
Transport Processing Product Line
Transport processing products include a line of framers, mappers, and switches for SONET/SDH, EoS, and OTN applications. These products operate at speeds up to 10 gigabit per second. Framers are devices that take incoming data traffic from the PHY and process the framing information used for transporting data. Mappers convert data from one protocol to another. The Company offers a line of framers and mappers for SONET/SDH, EoS and OTN applications. During the fiscal 2011, the Company also introduced the OTN Mapper/PHY with integrated 1588v2 packet timing and Ethernet Y.1731 OAM capability. The Company supplies a family of time slot interchange (TSI) switches for use in SONET/SDH equipment. The Company has various TSI switches in its product portfolio that provide aggregate bandwidth up to 1.5 terabyte per second. It also provides switch fabric chip sets for a variety of packet backplane applications. These switch fabric solutions allow total system interface bandwidths from 20 gigabit per second to 160 gigabit per second and higher.
