Verizon Communications Inc. (Verizon), incorporated on October 7, 1983, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, provides communications, information and entertainment products and services to consumers, businesses and governmental agencies. The Company offers voice, data and video services and solutions on its wireless and wireline networks. Its segments include Wireless and Wireline. The Wireless segment offers communications products and services, including wireless voice and data services and equipment sales that are provided to consumer, business and government customers across the United States. The Wireline segment offers voice, data and video communications products and services, such as broadband video and data, corporate networking solutions, data center and cloud services, security and managed network services, and local and long distance voice services. The Company provides these products and services to consumers in the United States, as well as to carriers, businesses and government customers both in the United States and around the world.
The Company's Wireless segment, doing business as Verizon Wireless, provides wireless communications services across wireless networks in the United States. Verizon Wireless has approximately 112.1 million retail connections. It also provides fourth-generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology and third-generation (3G) Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) networks.
The Company offers wireless services on a postpaid and prepaid basis. Retail (non-wholesale) postpaid accounts primarily represent retail customers under contract with Verizon Wireless that are directly served and managed by Verizon Wireless and use its branded services. The Company offers various postpaid account service plans, including shared data plans, single connection plans and plans to the needs of its business customers. Its shared data plans feature domestic unlimited voice minutes, unlimited domestic and international text, video and picture messaging, cloud storage and a single data allowance that can be shared over 10 devices on a customer's account.
The Company provides its customers an option of sharing long distance and roaming minutes among their devices for calls from the United States to, and calls while within Canada and Mexico. The Company also offers a range of wireless services accessible on a range of its devices. Its messaging services enable its customers to send and receive text, picture and video messages. In addition, access to the Internet is available on all of its smartphones and nearly all of its basic phones. It also offers service that enables its customers to access the Internet wirelessly at broadband speeds on notebook computers and tablets that either have embedded 4G LTE or 3G EV-DO modules or that are used in conjunction with separate devices that enable access to this service, such as universal serial bus (USB) modems, Jetpacks and other devices that provide a mobile wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) connection. The Company also enables its customers to access multimedia offerings, provided by third-parties, consisting of applications providing music, video, gaming, news and other content. The Company's location-based services provide its customers with directions to their destination and enable them to locate, monitor and communicate with their mobile field workers. Its global data services allow its customers to access data services and the Internet on all of its smartphones and many of its tablets and basic phones from hundreds of international destinations. In addition, depending upon their wireless device's operating system, its customers have access to over one million applications and services offered by Google Inc. (Google) through Google Inc. (Google) through Google Play, Apple Inc. (Apple) through iTunes, Microsoft Inc. (Microsoft) through its Windows Phone operating system and BlackBerry Limited (BlackBerry) through its BlackBerry App World Webstore.
The Company's customers can make and receive calls on their home phone handsets using its wireless network through its Home Phone Connect service or Verizon 4G LTE Broadband Router with Voice service. It also offers LTE Internet (Installed) that provides customers with Internet connections in their homes using the Company's 4G LTE network. In addition, the Company provides network access and, in some cases, delivers services to support wireless connections for the Internet of things (IoT). Its IoT services support devices that are used by a range of market segments, including health monitoring, education, manufacturing, utilities, distribution and consumer products.
The Company offers a range of wireless devices, including smartphones and basic phones, tablets and other Internet access devices. The smartphones offered by the Company are enabled to utilize the Company's 4G LTE and/or 3G EV-DO high-speed data services and run on operating platforms, such as Apple iPhone Operating System (iOS), Google Android, Windows Phone operating system (OS) and BlackBerry OS. The basic phones it offers are 3G EV-DO-enabled and have HTML-browsing capability. The Company offers tablets from a range of manufacturers. The tablets run primarily on the Apple iOS, Google Android or Microsoft Windows operating systems. In addition, the Company offers Jetpacks that provide a mobile Wi-Fi 4G LTE and/or 3G EV-DO connection and are capable of connecting multiple Wi-Fi enabled devices to the Internet at one time. The customers can also access the Internet wirelessly at broadband speeds on their computers through data cards, universal serial bus (USB) modems or with certain laptop computers and netbooks with embedded 4G LTE and 3G EV-DO Mobile Broadband modules.
The Company also offers a range of international wireless voice and data services to its customers through roaming arrangements with wireless service providers outside of the United States. Its primary network technology platforms are 4G LTE and 3G code division multiple access (CDMA). The Company also offers mobile Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service, known as Voice over LTE (VoLTE).
The Company's Wireline segment provides voice, data and video communications products and services, including broadband video and data, corporate networking solutions, data center and cloud services, security and managed network services, and local and long distance voice services.
The Company organizes its service and product offerings by the primary customers targeted by these offerings, such as mass markets, global enterprise and global wholesale. Mass Markets operations provide broadband services, including high-speed Internet, Fios Internet and Fios Video services, and local exchange, including basic service and end user access and long distance, including regional toll voice services to residential and small business subscribers. The Company offers Fios Internet and high-speed Internet services with varying throughput speeds, including Fios Quantum, which includes speeds of over 50 megabytes per second (Mbps).
The Company offers video service over its fiber-optic network. Fios Video is available to approximately 20 million homes across 10 states, as well as the District of Columbia. Fios Quantum TV (television) provides Fios TV customers with features, including the ability to record over 10 shows at once and control live television from any room in their home. Fios Custom TV, which offers customers the option of purchasing a package of channels that, includes a base set of select national networks and local broadcast stations plus their choice of two sets of channels grouped into various content categories, such as news, sports and entertainment. Fios on Demand gives Fios customers the ability to watch content anytime and anywhere, on any compatible device. It offers voice services that include local exchange, regional and long distance calling and voice messaging services, as well as VoIP services, which use the Internet or private broadband networks to transmit voice communications.
Global Enterprise offers services and other communications services to medium and large business customers, including multinational corporations, as well as state and federal government customers. Verizon Enterprise Solutions offers an array of advanced information and communication technology services, including Global Internet protocol (IP) network, cloud, and information technology solutions, and business communications, IoT, data, security and mobility services.
The Company's networking products and solutions primarily include Private IP, and Ethernet access and optical networking services. Private IP service enables customers across the world to communicate over a private, secure network using a range of access methods, including Ethernet and Verizon Wireless 4G LTE. Ethernet access services allow customers to connect network environments across the world.
The Company offers IT infrastructure services, including collocation and managed hosting in over 50 data centers around the globe. Its cloud services include computing, storage, backup, recovery and application platforms its customers rely on to run their business operations. Business communications services include IP communications services, which simplify network management by enabling the convergence of voice and data traffic on the same access connection; Internet access, which provides enterprise customers with access to Verizon's global network; unified communications and collaboration capabilities, which enable customers to communicate in real time through VoIP and IP conferencing, and emergency communication services, which allow customers to respond to emergencies while maintaining business continuity. It offers IoT services to customers. Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which is enabled by secure network connectivity and cloud infrastructure, can transform data into useful information for consumers, businesses and institutions. The Company offers ThingSpace for customers and developers to develop, manage and market IoT devices and applications. It offers a suite of data security services to help companies secure their networks, data, applications and infrastructure from security threats. Core services include core voice and data services, which consist of a portfolio of global solutions utilizing traditional telecommunications technology, such as conferencing and contact center solutions, and private line and data access networks. Core services also provide customer premise equipment, and installation, maintenance and site services.
Global Wholesale provides communications services, including data, voice, local dial tone and broadband services primarily to local, long distance and other carriers that use the Company's facilities to provide services to their customers. Global Wholesale's services include data services, voice services and local services. The Company offers a portfolio of data services with varying speeds and options. Its data services include digital data offerings, such as Ethernet and Wavelength services, as well as core data circuits, such as DS1s and DS3s. Data services also include business services, including Managed services, Mobility offerings and Security services. Managed services offer wholesale customers to outsource the management of their networks, security, remote access and Web applications to Verizon. Mobility enables wholesale customers to enhance their portfolio to triple-play or quad-play capability by leveraging wireless devices and services offered through Verizon Wireless that can be packaged and resold under their own carrier brand. Security provides wholesale customers integrated solutions to help their enterprise end users secure their networks and data.
The Company provides switched access services that allow carriers to complete their end user calls that originate or terminate within its territory. It offers an array of local dial tone and broadband services to competitive local exchange carriers. In addition, the Company offers services, such as colocation, resale and unbundled network elements in compliance with applicable regulations.
The Company competes with AT&T, Sprint Corporation, T-Mobile USA, Microsoft Inc., Google Inc. and Apple Inc.
