VCA Inc., incorporated on May 4, 1987, is an animal healthcare company operating in the United States and Canada. The Company provides veterinary services and diagnostic testing to support veterinary care. The Company sells diagnostic imaging equipment and other medical technology products and related services to the veterinary market. The Company operates through five segments: animal hospitals (Animal Hospital), veterinary diagnostic laboratories (Laboratory), veterinary medical technology (Medical Technology), Vetstreet and Camp Bow Wow Franchising, Inc. (Camp Bow Wow). Its Animal Hospital segment provides veterinary services for companion animals and sells related retail and pharmaceutical products. Its Laboratory segment provides diagnostic laboratory testing services for veterinarians, both associated with its animal hospitals and those independent of the Company. Its Medical Technology segment sells digital radiography and ultrasound imaging equipment; provides education and training on the use of that equipment; provides consulting and mobile imaging services, and sells software and ancillary services to the veterinary market. Its Vetstreet segment provides a range of services to the veterinary community, including online communications, professional education, marketing solutions and a home delivery platform for independent animal hospitals. Its Camp Bow Wow business franchises a provider of pet services, including dog day care, overnight boarding, grooming and other ancillary services at specially designed pet care facilities, principally under the Camp Bow Wow name. As of December 31, 2016, the Company had 130 Camp Bow Wow franchise locations operating in 33 states and in one Canadian province.
The Company's animal hospitals offer a range of general medical and surgical services for companion animals, as well as specialized treatments, including diagnostic services, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology and cardiology. In addition, the Company provides pharmaceutical products and performs a range of pet wellness programs, including health examinations, diagnostic testing, routine vaccinations, spaying, neutering and dental care. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's network of animal hospitals was supported by over 5,000 veterinarians and had approximately 11.8 million patient visits. The Company's network of veterinary diagnostic laboratories provides testing and consulting services used by veterinarians in the detection, diagnosis, evaluation, monitoring, treatment and prevention of diseases and other conditions affecting animals. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's network of veterinary diagnostic laboratories provided diagnostic testing for over 17,000 clients, which includes animal hospitals, animal practices, universities and other government organizations.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated or managed 795 animal hospitals serving 43 states and five Canadian provinces. In addition to general medical and surgical services, the Company offers specialized treatments for companion animals, including diagnostic services, internal medicine, oncology, neurology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, dermatology and cardiology. The Company also provides pharmaceutical products for use in the delivery of treatments by its veterinarians and pet owners. The Company's animal hospitals offer additional services, including grooming, bathing and boarding. The Company sells specialty pet products at its animal hospitals, including pet food, vitamins, therapeutic shampoos and conditioners, flea collars and sprays, and other accessory products.
The Company operates a full-service, veterinary diagnostic laboratory network in the United States and certain areas in Canada. As of December 31, 2016, the Company serviced a customer base of over 17,000 clients, including animal hospitals. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's diagnostic spectrum included over 300 tests in the area of chemistry, pathology, endocrinology, serology, hematology and microbiology, as well as tests specific to particular diseases. The Company offers services in the areas of pathology internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, dermatology, neurology and endocrinology. The Company operates approximately 60 veterinary diagnostic laboratories. As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated 61 veterinary diagnostic laboratories.
The Company competes with Banfield Pet Hospitals, National Veterinary Associates, IDEXX Laboratories, Siemens, Philips and Canon.
