TAL Education Group, incorporated on January 10, 2008, is a holding company for a group of companies engaged in provision of after-school tutoring programs for primary and secondary school students in the People’s Republic of China (the PRC). The Company is a K-12 after-school tutoring services provider in the PRC. The Company offers tutoring services to K-12 students covering core academic subjects, including mathematics, English, Chinese, physics, chemistry and biology , history, political science and geography as well as preschool classes. It delivers its tutoring services through small classes, personalized premium services (such as one-on-one tutoring) and online course offerings. As of February 28, 2013, it network consisted of 255 learning centers and 237 service centers in 15 cities throughout China, with most of these learning centers and service centers located in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as its online platform. During the fiscal year ended February 28, 2013 (fiscal 2013), the Company’s student enrollments were 816,110. It operates www.eduu.com, an online education platform in the PRC. It provides its existing student’s access to learning resources its physical network and supports the promotion of its services through word-of-mouth referrals. In addition, the Company’s online platform enables it to continue to roll out and expand its online course offerings.
The Company delivers courses in small class settings of 15 to 35, which remain its main form of service offering in terms of revenue and number of student enrollments. As of February 28, 2013, 155 of the Company’s 225 learning centers and 135 of its 237 service centers nationwide offer small classes. A typical small class course consists of 10 or 15 sessions during each spring and fall school semester and seven to 15 sessions during each summer and winter break. Each session typically lasts two to three hours with course fees ranging from RMB40 to RMB80 per hour.
Personalized Premium Services
The Company offers personalized premium services under its Zhikang brand. As of February 28, 2013, its Zhikang network expanded to include 96 learning centers and 98 service centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Xi’an and Chengdu. The course fees for its personalized premium services range from RMB100 to RMB 250 per 40 minutes. Its personalized premium services provide customized curricula and course materials and flexible schedules to suit each student’s educational focus in a one-on-one student-teacher setting. It provides personalized premium services to cater to the specific requirements of its students, such as addressing weaknesses in particular subjects or topics, providing intensive examination or competition preparation and tailoring the pace of learning to accommodate above- or below-average learning curves. Key features of its personalized premium services include completely customized tutoring solution, tailor-made course materials, one-on-one student-teacher setting, supported by a team of experienced teachers and personalized attention.
The Company offers online courses. Its online course Website, www.xueersi.com, it offers online courses in math, English, Chinese, physics, chemistry and biology. The online course fees range from RMB20 to RMB60 per hour. Online courses enable the Company to leverage its curricula and course materials and teachers to target markets. It also enables its students to access its courses through the Internet at times and places most convenient for them. Key features of its online courses include high quality audio-video lectures, teachers with superior communication skills, quality course-related support and comprehensive student supports.
The Company focuses to provide a supportive learning environment to its students through its teachers, class coordinators, call centers and online platform. Its teachers keep track of the students’ performance and progress and regularly communicate with the students and parents. Moreover, each of its students in the personalized premium services is assigned a class coordinator who is in close contact with the students and parents regarding scheduling and other logistical issues, receives feedback on teaching quality and arranges teacher replacements where necessary. It has call centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Nanjing, the main functions of, which include receiving enquiries, accepting registrations, addressing course-related issues and facilitating communication with existing and prospective students and their parents. In addition, it regularly reaches out to students of its online courses through the call centers to keep track of their progress. As of February 28, 2013, the Company had approximately 170 operators at these call centers.
