Xyratex Ltd (Xyratex), incorporated on April 10, 2002, is a provider of data storage technology, including modular solutions for the enterprise data storage industry and hard disk drive (HDD) capital equipment for the HDD industry. The Company operates in two segments: Networked Storage Solutions (NSS) and Storage Infrastructure (SI). Its NSS products are primarily HDD based data storage subsystems and solutions, which it provides to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Xyratex’s SI products consist of HDD manufacturing process equipment, which it sells directly to manufacturers of HDDs and their component suppliers. The Company’s product and solution portfolio for the enterprise data storage industry includes storage enclosures, integrated application platforms and high performance computing (HPC) data storage solutions. Xyratex introduced the ClusterStor 3000, in June 2011.
Xyratex’s HDD based storage subsystems support a range of communication technologies. Its modular subsystem architecture allows it to support many segments within the networked storage market. In addition, the Company manages a number of research consortia, with industrial and academic partners, focusing on long term needs of storage system users and markets. Xyratex supports its customers through production facilities in Sacramento and Fremont in California, United States; Seremban, Malaysia, and Havant, United Kingdom. The Company sells its enterprise data storage solutions primarily to OEMs, and Xyratex’s HDD capital equipment products primarily to HDD manufacturers or their component suppliers. Xyratex Technology Limited, Xyratex Holdings Inc., Xyratex International Inc. and Xyratex (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. are its subsidiaries.
Enterprise Data Storage Market
The Company designs, develops and manufactures enterprise data storage solutions. OneStor storage enclosures are modular enclosures that house between 12 to 84 enterprise and/or solid state disk (SSD) drives and support 6 gigabyte/s serial attached small computer system interface (SAS) input/output (I/O) modules. These systems offer its customers utilizing the SSD and HDD technologies in either the 3.5 inch or 2.5 inch form factors. OneStor integrated application platforms include the OneStor embedded storage platforms, which incorporate embedded server modules into its OneStor storage enclosures using the same form factor as Xyratex’s I/O modules and OneStor Storage application platforms.
OneStor integrated application platforms delivers enterprise management and serviceability through its Unified Storage Management (USM) software that includes features, such as command line interface (CLI) over local area network (LAN), keyboard/video/mouse over IP (iKVM), and an expanded management interface software. HPC solutions are rack-scale solutions that consolidate controllers, the Company’s storage enclosures and application platforms, operating system, data protection, Lustre File System and its scalable management software. ClusterStor is an approach in HPC data storage. Xyratex’s products provide the digital interfaces to HDDs and SSDs using fibre-channel (FC), SAS and serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) technologies. Xyratex’s enterprise data storage products are internally managed by a range of firmware modules and features.
The Company competes with Dot Hill Systems Corp, MiTAC International Corporation, Sanmina-SCI Corporation, EMC Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd.
Hard Disk Drive Capital Equipment Market
Xyratex’s capital equipment product portfolio for the HDD industry includes process, inspection and test equipment utilized in drive processing systems (DPS) and drive component technologies (DCT). The Company designs and manufactures a range of process test systems that incorporate mechanical and electronic hardware and firmware for controlling the HDD operating environment during the formatting of the disk drive. Its Optimus and XCalibre product families provide automated solutions for both 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch hard drives. Xyratex’s XMan product family provides a dedicated manual test environment for both 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch hard drives.
Xyratex designs and manufactures a range of automated solutions to test and process HDD components throughout the manufacturing process. It also designs and manufactures servo track writers and their key subassemblies and the required automation system. In addition, Xyratex’s head testing systems provides a range of capabilities related to the read and write head/slider devices throughout the manufacturing process including automated handling transfer and alignment (Polaris platform), surface attitude measurement (Orion platform) and defect detection and inspection (Apollo platform).
The Company competes with Hitachi High-Technologies Corp. and Teradyne, Inc.
