Sonae SGPS SA (Sonae) is a Portugal-based holding company that controls and manages a portfolio of businesses, divided into three branches: retail, shopping centers and telecommunications. Sonae’s business portfolio consists of Sonae Distribuicao SGPS SA, which is involved in the food and non-food retail through the Continente brand; Sonae Sierra SGPS SA, that is engaged in the ownership, management and development of shopping centers, and Sonaecom SGPS SA, which provides mobile, fixed communications and multimedia services. As of December 31, 2008, the Company’s retail sector registered a total of 793 stores and a total of 809 thousand square meters of sales area. In the distribution area, through Sonae Distribuicao SGPS SA, the Company expanded its operations internationally entering into the Spanish market with two of its non-food brands, named SportZone and Worten.
