Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited announced the signing of agreements with Biovel Lifesciences Private Limited (Biovel), Bangalore, India, providing for the acquisition of product rights and a manufacturing facility, from Biovel. The proposed transaction will give Ranbaxy access to all of Biovel's products, pipeline, IP, Know how and manufacturing facility, located in Bangalore, India. The products that are part of the transaction include Typhoid Vi antigen and Hib conjugate vaccines, for which, Biovel has received regulatory approval for India.

This transaction is part of Ranbaxy's endeavour to develop a new business model for China which entails the marketing of value added pharmaceutical formulations and the consolidation of manufacturing operations, for cost synergies. 

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited Says US Unit Gets Violations Notice-Reuters

Reuters reported that Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited said its wholly owned U.S.-based unit Ohm Laboratories Inc has received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relating to violations of good manufacturing practices. The FDA letter, dated December 21, mentions violations at Ohm's liquid manufacturing facility in Gloversville, New York, Ranbaxy said in a statement after markets closed. The FDA conducted site inspections at the plant in July and August 2009. The Company will continue to cooperate with the US FDA to bring the matter to closure in a timely manner and remains committed in its efforts to be fully compliant with US regulatory standards, Ranbaxy said. Ohm has retained global consulting firm PRTM Inc to advise on issues cited by the FDA, it said.

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited and Daiichi Sankyo Company Limited announced that Ranbaxy will launch Olmesartan Medoxomil, an antihypertensive originally discovered by Daiichi Sankyo, in six African countries; Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The companies will launch the products under the brand name Olvance, as soon as the necessary measure have been completed in each county.

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited Won't Sell Generic Version Of Purdue Drug-DJ

Dow Jones reported that Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited won't go ahead with its plans to make and sell a generic version of Purdue Pharma LP's OxyContin painkiller, the Financial Chronicle reported, without citing any sources. Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited and its units, which Purdue sued in October for patent infringements, admitted in a U.S. district court in New York last week that their Food & Drug Administration application to sell a generic version of OxyContin infringed a Purdue patent, the report said. The court gave a consent judgment, dismissing Purdue's suit without costs and asking Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited to refrain from infringing on the patent. Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited agreed also not to seek FDA approval to market generic versions of OxyContin until the expiry of the patent and any period of marketing exclusivity, the report said, citing an unnamed expert on patent laws. 

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited And Nippon Chemiphar Dissolve Their Joint Venture Nihon Pharmaceutical Industry Co. Ltd In Japan

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited and Nippon Chemiphar announced the dissolution of their joint venture Nihon Pharmaceutical Industry Co. Ltd, in Japan. This follows an agreement between the two companies that allows Nippon Chemiphar to purchase the entire shareholding of its erstwhile partner. Both companies held equal shares in the joint venture. Following the transaction, Nihon Pharmaceutical Industry will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Chemiphar. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
