Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. announced the AIS 600, its transceiver that allows boaters to receive and transmit Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, giving mariners a new way to identify and avoid other large sea vessels at long range in virtually any visibility. 

 
Garmin Ltd. Says Not Infringed PIONEER CORPORATION's Patents-Reuters

Reuters reported that Garmin Ltd. denied it infringed any patents and said it intended to defend itself against a patent suit filed by PIONEER CORPORATION. On Friday, PIONEER CORPORATION said in a statement that it had filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) against Garmin Ltd. alleging patent infringement, after license talks between the two broke down. PIONEER CORPORATION sought a ban on importing into the United States products that use the disputed patents and also seeks to prevent sales of such products that have already been imported, it had said. The three patents under dispute relate to on-vehicle navigational functions, including the automatic erasing of data as the destination draws near, or showing the distance from a vehicle to various locations. In October, PIONEER CORPORATION sued Garmin Ltd. in a German district court alleging patent infringement and sought a court order enjoining sales of infringing Garmin Ltd. products as well as seeking compensation, PIONEER CORPORATION said.

Reuters reported that Garmin Ltd. posted a surprise rise in quarterly profit on increased demand for its personal navigation devices (PND) and better margins sending its shares up. 

 
Shares Of Garmin Ltd. and TomTom N.V. Plunge On Droid Launch-WSJ

The Wall Street Journal reported that Garmin Ltd. and TomTom N.V. plunged after Google Inc. upgraded its smart-phone software to include a free navigation feature. The smart phone to feature Google's new navigation software is the Motorola Inc. Droid, which was unveiled Wednesday. The phone goes on sale November 6 through Verizon Wireless, which plans to aggressively market the device. In a blog post, Google said its new Google Maps Navigation feature provides turn-by-turn directions based on up-to-date maps and business listings from Google Maps. It will be available to other smart phones through a new version of Google's Android operating system. The news sent shares of the companies reeling.
