Vical Incorporated announced that the Company's TransVax cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine continued to demonstrate an overall increase in cellular immune responses compared with placebo at the seven-month immunogenicity data point in an ongoing Phase 2 trial. TransVax is a bivalent DNA vaccine containing plasmids (closed loops of DNA) encoding CMV phosphoprotein 65 (pp65) and glycoprotein B (gB) for induction of cellular and humoral immune responses.

Vical Incorporated announced that the U.S. Navy has awarded a contract for $1.25 million to support large-scale cGMP vaccine manufacturing and related clinical and regulatory preparations, which are already underway, for a Phase 1 clinical trial of the Company's vaccine against A/H1N1 pandemic influenza (swine flu). The trial will be conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), a biomedical research organization within the Navy.

Reuters reported that Vical Incorporated said a peptide-based cancer vaccine formulated with its adjuvant, Vaxfectin, showed strong immune responses and reduced numbers of tumors in rodents. The test data encourage further development of additional cancer applications and exploration of partnering opportunities, Vical said in a statement.
Vical Incorporated Says H1N1 Vaccine Showed Promise In Animals-Reuters
Reuters reported that Vical Incorporated said its DNA vaccine for H1N1 pandemic influenza showed strong immune responses in animals against virus strains isolated from the recent outbreaks in California, Texas and Mexico. The vaccine produced immune responses well above the accepted protection threshold in all the vaccinated mice and rabbits after two doses. The Company also expects the vaccine to show similar immune responses against other H1N1 influenza virus subtypes.
