Prof. Genevieve Berger serves as Chief Scientific Officer of Unilever NV since July 2008. She was educated in physics and medicine, and holds three doctorates: a Doctorate in Philosophy in Physics, a Doctorate in Philosophy in Human Biology and a Medical Doctorate. She was appointed Professor of Medicine at the Pierre and Marie Curie University (UPMC), France in 1996, and held the position of Professor and Hospital Practitioner at La Pitie-Salpetriere Teaching Hospital, France from 2003 to 2008. She served as Director of the Biotech and Agri-Food Department at the French Ministry for Education, Research and Technology from 1998 to 2000, and was appointed Head of the Technology Directorate at the French Ministry of Research in 2000. From 2000 to 2003 she was Director General of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). She served as Chairman of the Advisory Group – Health for the European Commission from 2006 to 2008. She was also Non-Executive Director of the Company from 2007 to 2008. She was appointed Non-Executive Director of Smith & Nephew PLC in March 2010. Currently, she is Non-Executive Director at AstraZeneca PLC.
