Texas and Temple have each won three games in a row heading into Saturday's meeting at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center. The Longhorns lead the series 3-2, including a home win in 2011. The teams haven't met in Philadelphia since 1939 and the series includes two postseason meetings - a Texas victory in the 1978 NIT and a Temple win in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
Temple 87, Alabama-Birmingham 66: Dalton Pepper notched a career high for the second straight game, scoring 24 points as the Owls ran past the Blazers in the fifth-place game of the Charleston Classic at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
After edging Houston in an American Athletic Conference showdown last week, No. 19 Central Florida enters Saturday's visit to last-place Temple alone atop the conference standings. The Knights overcame three turnovers to topple the Cougars 19-14 and are inching toward the automatic BCS berth that comes with winning the American, though coach George O'Leary remains focused on the Owls. "Every game is a new adventure," he told the Orlando Sentinel. "(The players) have to work."
After getting career-best performances from Dalton Pepper and Will Cummings in a win over Pennsylvania in the season opener, Temple opens its home schedule against Kent State on Monday. The Owls nearly blew a 15-point lead, falling behind by two with 39 seconds left before rolling off the game's final seven points. "We would have liked for it to have been easier," Pepper told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But the good thing is we showed poise down the stretch."
What Temple coach Fran Dunphy lacks in returning talent, he will try to make up for with familiarity on Saturday when his Owls continue their “Big Five” city rivalry at Pennsylvania. One of only eight teams to compete in the last six NCAA Tournaments, Temple must replace 73 percent of its offensive output from a season ago, including Atlantic-10 Player of the Year Khalif Wyatt. The Owls also changed conferences in the offseason, leaving for the new American Athletic Conference.
Rutgers 23, Temple 20: Gary Nova connected with Leonte Carroo on a 33-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-10 with 35 seconds to play to push the host Scarlet Knights past the Owls in American Athletic Conference play.
