Dec. 31 - It's now open season when it comes to publishing the influential texts and concepts of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India's nationalist movement against British rule.
Copyright law holds that 60 years after someone's death, their written works go into the public domain. In the process, the Navajivan Trust that had exercised copyright on Gandhi's writings, will have to forego royalties in the future. Susan Flory reports.
SOUNDBITE: Amrut Modi, Managing Trustee, Sabarmati Ashram, saying (Hindi):
"Gandhiji never supported the idea of copyright. But due to some instances where his thoughts were misinterpreted, he was forced to give in to the insistence of well-wishers urging him to get his works copyrighted."
