U.S. stocks end rocky year.

Dec 31 - U.S. stocks closed higher for the second straight day on this light New Year's Eve session -- but the numbers for the year aren't pretty.

  • The Dow Jones gained 108 points to close at 8,776.39.
  • The S&P 500 was up 12.61 points to close at 903.25.
  • The Nasdaq gained 26.33 points to end at 1577.03.
  • Crude oil settled at $44.60 a barrel.
