Volcano watchers back in business

(01:16) Report

Jan 12 - Russian scientists are reestablishing monitoring stations at volcanoes in the eastern region of Kamchatka after volcano Koryasky starts releasing smoke.

The Kamchatka peninsula on the Pacific Ocean is one of the most seismologically active places on the planet. It is home to dozens of volcanoes.

Vulcanology fell victim to the financial troubles that plagued Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and funding for monitoring stations was cut. Now Russian authorities are starting to realise that the dangers posed by volcanoes can't be ignored.
