The carnival season in Germany opened in Cologne punctually at 11:11AM on Wednesday, November 11, with the traditional shout "Alaaf" and throwing sweets into the crowd.

In the capital of carnival in Germany, thousands crowded the streets and marketplaces, their faces painted as clowns, singing to traditional music.

The season runs through the winter until Ash Wednesday, when over four hundred balls and other festivities take place.
