Dispute over Afghan deaths

Jun. 29 - U.S. soldiers killed four civilian members of the same family during a raid in eastern Afghanistan but insist the men were militants.

A U.S. military spokesman says its forces killed three militants after troops came under fire during an anti-Taliban operation. The number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan has risen sharply this year as fighting intensifies between U.S.-led coalition forces and a resurgent Taliban. Both sides have been criticised for not doing enough to avoid civilian casualties.
