Putin cites US plot in election

(01:58) Report

Nov. 26 - President Vladimir Putin accused Washington of plotting to undermine next week's parliamentary elections after Europe's election monitoring body, the OSCE, abandoned plans to observe the poll

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) said Russian obstruction - not U.S. influence - was behind its decision to pull out its observers ahead of December 2nd's elections, which are being seen as a demonstration of Putin's enduring power in Russia. The US joined the European Commission in voicing concerns about the treatment of the Russian opposition following a police crackdown on anti-Kremlin rallies at the weekend, which saw the arrest of opposition leader and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

  • Featured Speaker: Russian President, Vladimir Putin, saying,(Russian):
"We have information that, once again, this was done on the recommendation of the U.S. State Department. We, of course, will take this into account in our inter-state dealings; this is for sure. Actions such as these cannot wreck the elections in Russia. Their aim is to deprive the elections of legitimacy, that is absolutely clear. But they are not going to achieve that."
