Omaha gunman sought 'fame'

(01:40) Report

Dec. 6 - U.S. media say a teenage gunman who killed 8 shoppers at a busy U.S. mall before shooting himself left a suicide note in which he spoke of his desire to become famous.

Omaha police in the U.S. state of Nebraska named the gunman as 19-year-old Robert Hawkins. Local media said he'd recently been fired from his job at a McDonalds fast-food restaurant and had been suffering from depression. Police confirmed that he left a suicide note. Earlier, President Bush made an address in Omaha but had left the city hours before the rampage. The White House released a statement saying the President was "deeply saddened" by the shootings.

Helen Long reports.
