May 8 - U.S. stocks posted small gains early Thursday thanks to encouraging monthly sales figures from Wal-Mart, Costo Wholesale and several teen-oriented shopkeepers.
Investors, however, kept watch on oil prices which headed lower after touching a new record near $124 a barrel.
Weekly jobless claims dropped more than expected.
