Starfish climb underwater mountain

(01:09) Report

May 18 - Tens of millions of starfish-like creatures have been found in a colony on a subsea mountaintop south of New Zealand.

The tiny creatures are called "brittlestars" and were found on a peak 90 metres below the sea surface on the subsea Macquarie Range stretching 1,400 km (870 miles) south of New Zealand towards Antarctica.

Scientists have named the peak "Brittlestar City" after the five-armed creatures.

This underwater footage was filmed by a robotic submarine and shows the colony as it appeared last April.

The discovery is helping scientists build a better understanding of seamounts - mountains that rise from the ocean floor without piercing the surface.
