Floods threaten Colombia

May 27. - In Central Colombia, authorities have declared a state of emergency after heavy rains hit the area, destroying hundreds of acres of land.

The Madgalena River, one of Colombia's main waterways, continued to rise, threatening the livelihood of thousands of residents.

SOUNDBITE:Mayor Antonio Moreno Vera, Puerto Salgar saying(Spanish):
"We'll conduct a census of all those who wish to leave, because we don't know where to take them, it's very serious. Schools are full and surrounded areas are completely flooded, there is no where, not a dry place to take them."
