Aug 8 - Beijing was under hazy skies that turned the sun a lurid orange on Friday (August 8), the day of the most expensive opening ceremony in the history of the Olympic Games.
The smog was so thick that some Olympic buildings were barely visible, even though Beijingers have the day off so there would be fewer cars than usual to add to pollution.
The forecast for Friday was clouds with light rain and a light breeze, unlikely to be enough to shift the haze, although organisers forecast that pollution would stay just within healthy "blue sky" levels for the day.
