Tamarins buck the trend

(01:27) Report

Aug 19 - While most primates face the threat of extinction, in Brazil, Golden Lion Tamarins are bucking the trend.

To save this species from extinction, the Brazilian conservationists says there must be at least 2,000 tamarins living in protected areas by 2025. Golden lion tamarin monkeys are among the world's rarest mammals, with only about 1,400 living in the wild.

Deborah Lutterbeck reports.SOUNDBITE: Andrea Martins, coordinator of the Golden Tamarin Project, saying (Portuguese):
"We currently have only two tamarins who came from zoos. We have reintroduced 153 animals and only two came from zoos and have been living over the past ten years in the wild, and the other 750 (tamarins) are all sons, grandsons and great-grandsons of this population we reintroduced."
