Jan 11 - Argentinean carnival season gets underway with parades in the country's main venue.
Floats, dancers and bands from different carnival groups paraded through the long, narrow stadium in the town of Gauleguaychu, some 140 miles (230 km) north of the capital Buenos Aires. An animated crowd of around 12,000 got up early to dance through a hot Sunday morning on the opening weekend of festivities.
Although overshadowed by Rio de Janeiro's world famous party, carnival in Gualeguaychu continues to gather steam, with people working on floats, costumes and themes all year.
