Jan 12 - Mourners attend the funeral of German tycoon Adolf Merckle, who commited suicide in despair over huge losses made during the global financial crisis.

74-year-old billionaire Merckle, who was ranked as the world's 94th richest person by Forbes magazine in 2008, threw himself in front of a train. Merckle's family controls some of Gerrmany's best-known companies, including HeidelbergCement, and they reportedly lost hundreds of millions of euros on investments last year.
