Tim Pawlenty is a former Minnesota governor who was on Senator John McCain's short list as a vice-presidential running mate in 2008. His supporters fondly call him T-Paw.
The son of a truck driver who grew up near stockyards and a meat-packing plant, Pawlenty was 16 when his mother died of cancer and his father lost his job. He went on to work his way through college and law school at the University of Minnesota. He entered the Minnesota governor's office in 2003 by stressing his modest roots.
During his two gubernatorial terms until 2011, he became known for his conservative stance on social and economic issues.
He announced his 2012 candidacy in Des Moines, Iowa, in May. He was criticized by Republicans for a lack of toughness required to defeat incumbent President Barack Obama and his Republican rivals. After a disappointing finish in the 2011 Iowa Straw Poll, he withdrew from the 2012 race. Since then, he has endorsed ex-rival Mitt Romney.
