People across Australia celebrate their official national day on Wednesday- providing a welcome distraction from floods which have devastated its eastern seaboard. In Sydney residents marked Australia day in true Aussie style. The famous Bondi beach was the destination of choice for many, as they cooled off in the water after a day of celebration. Even Aussies who chose to stay at home were caught up in the spirit of Australia Day. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MAN: "I think on Australia Day we should all mix together. We are a multicultural country, that's the way it should be. We're all friends." Sydney harbour was awash with Australian flags as residents celebrated at their iconic landmarks. Australia Day commemorates the date in 1788 that the British sent the first fleet of ships to establish a prisoner settlement in Australia. The day also saw recognition of the country's ancient aboriginal culture. Simon Hanna, Reuters.
