INTRO: The US Navy says it has successfully tested its latest weapon in aerial warfare, the X-47B unmanned aircraft. The X-47B has been designed for use at sea as a carrier-based plane, but it's first ever test-flight took place in the skies over Edwards Air force base in California. STORY: The X-47B takes off on its maiden flight. It is designed as the first sea-based drone capable of carrying out pre-programmed attack missions without the need for human intervention. It can fly more than 500 mph at an altitude of 40,000 feet and has not tail fin to reduce noise. On long-distance missions the X-47 can autonomously refuel in mid-air. The unmanned aircraft's ability to take-off and land aboard an aircraft carrier will be tested in 2013. The main aim of this first flight was to check guidance and navigation software, as well as the aerodynamic control of the design. Engineers say it passed with flying colours. Tara Cleary, Reuters.
