Backstage in New York, at Yoana Baraschi's show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. This season, the designer decided to mix it up a little and cast a male model, Andrej Pejic, to star in her Fall 2011 women's line presentation. The androgynous Australian says having people wonder about his gender is nothing new. SOUNDBITE: Andrej Pejic, model, saying (English): "It's been like that for, you know I get that. I had stares when I was younger and stuff so, I mean it's not all that new." Except now, Pejic is making a lot more money and he's not too bothered about whether people say "he" or "she". SOUNDBITE: Andrej Pejic, model, saying (English): "Well you know I have a male name, and I'm on the men's board (at the modeling agency) so 'he' is fine. But it's not that big of a deal to me." Baraschi says her decision to include Pejic came when she saw his photograph. SOUNDBITE: Yoana Baraschi, designer, saying (English): "I fell in love with the guy and you know, his presence that he has in his eyes and I thought that in a you know an androgynous model would be perfect in this full reality world where everything is not what it really is." And she says Pejic's genderless look fit perfectly into her collection's theme. SOUNDBITE: Yoana Baraschi, designer, saying (English): "Well the inspiration for the collection is actually a journey in what I call virtual land. Which is a place that we all spend a lot of time in now. So it's really about the digitally enhanced world, taking the natural world and putting in, seeing it in a computer, on a computer screen." Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues in New York until February 17th. Tara Cleary, Reuters, New York.
