An oil refinery -- set ablaze by the 8.9 magnitude quake that struck near Japan's northeast coast. The large refinery near Ichihara in Chiba prefecture sends billowing black smoke into the sky, and the flames are threatening dozens of storage tanks that could also erupt. Emergency teams were on site trying to put out the flames -- but the latest reports suggest the fires still rage. The death toll from the tremor and subsequent tsunamis has risen to at least 32, and that number is expected to rise. The quake was the most powerful since records began 140 years ago. It surpasses the great Kanto quake of September 1, 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 14,000 people in the Tokyo area. Travis Brecher, Reuters
