Undeterred in Syria. Amateur video from Damascus which could not be independently verified by Reuters, shows demonstrators continuing to call for the end of the regime. The demonstrations come despite a widening military crackdown on popular unrest. Footage, purportedly shot Friday, shows demonstrations across the country amid reports that five protesters were killed and scores more wounded as the Syrian government tightens its grip. Human rights groups say more than 1,100 civilians have been killed since March in the revolt to press demands for more political freedoms and an end to corruption and poverty. In the country of 20 million people, thousands continue to call for change. Many have fled the country. President Bashar al-Assad is promising reforms, even while cracking down on unrest - posing the gravest threat to his 11 year rule. Syria has barred most independent media from the country, making it difficult to verify accounts of the bloodshed. Last Friday, security forces reportedly killed at least 70 protesters.
