Ahmad Wali Karzai, a brother of Afghan president Hamid Karzai, and one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan, has been assassinated. Officials say he was apparently killed by one of his bodyguards. A spokesman for the governor of Kandahar also confirmed that Karzai was killed inside his home. Residents of Kandahar are shocked at the news. (SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) AHMAD SHAH, A RESIDENT OF KANDAHAR, SAYING: "We heard that Ahmad Wali Karzai has been killed inside his house, the people of Kandahar are very sad about this news." Ahmad Wali has survived at least one other assassination attempt in recent years. A half-brother of the president, he was a critical power broker who helped shore up his brother's influence in volatile southern Afghanistan. But he has also been accused of corruption, and of ties to Afghanistan's huge opium trade that helps fund the Taliban-led insurgency. Ahmad Wali Karzai had denied the accusations.
